There’s a Secret “Portal to Hell” at Disneyland – Here’s Why

Disneyland Park’s Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride is famous for its fiery finale, but some Disney Parks fans claim there’s another so-called “portal to hell” hidden in the Matterhorn Bobsleds.

Since 1955, Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride has been sending guests on a chaotic journey through London and straight into the underworld. Meanwhile, the towering Matterhorn Bobsleds, which debuted in 1959, takes riders on a thrilling descent through a snowy Alpine peak—complete with a terrifying encounter with the Abominable Snowman. But despite their vastly different themes, some Disney Parks fans believe both rides share an eerie connection.

Redditor u/bchris24 recently shared a nighttime photo of the Matterhorn’s first tunnel, as seen from the loading station, claiming that “the lighting from the Matterhorn station at night makes it look like a portal to hell.”

The image shows an ominous red glow emanating from the tunnel’s entrance, sparking playful commentary from Disney Parks fans.

Disney Parks Fans Weigh In

Many agreed that the ride’s dimly lit interior and eerie ambiance are best experienced after dark.

“IMO the Matterhorn is quite a bit more ‘scary’ at night,” u/SensitiveDeer commented. “There’s really no lights inside, so for long portions of the ride you’re zipping around in the darkness! Much more thrilling that way.”

Others joked that the actual hellish experience isn’t the tunnel—it’s the ride’s notoriously rough track.

“My spine would say that it is,” u/Hyro0o0 quipped.

Should Disney Lean Into the Matterhorn Bobsleds Ride’s Spooky Vibes?

Some fans suggested that Disneyland Resort embrace the Matterhorn‘s eerie reputation and incorporate Halloween elements during the fall season.

“Make [Oogie Boogie Bash] a 2-park event and have this be how the ride looks,” u/necros_25 suggested.

From the fiery depths of Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride to the chilling darkness of the Matterhorn Bobsleds, Disneyland Park is no stranger to eerie experiences. Whether or not the glowing tunnel is a true “portal to hell,” one thing is sure—guests will continue to find new and unexpected thrills at the Happiest Place on Earth.
