Former Disney Cast Member Faces Backlash Over Dangerous ‘Hack’ Incident

A former Disney cast member was the target of harsh comments online, as a “hack” she shared caused intense backlash.

When visiting Walt Disney World Resort, every guest wants to know the best tips and tricks to make the most of their visit, optimize their time at the parks, and find secret experiences, among other things.

Unfortunately, a recently shared “hack” caused outrage among viewers, making the former cast member who shared it face severe backlash online.

TikTok user @katherineskingdom recently posted a video saying it was a sign for viewers to “wear Disney Pins as earrings.” The former cast member modeled her ears, showing a Tinkerbell and a Lizzie McGuire pin in each of them in the middle of Main Street, U.S.A.

The user mentioned that she “wore clean, new [Disney] pins with normal earring backs” and added that her ears did not react to this bold choice of accessories. While this “hack” is apparently harmless, following the former cast member’s advice could be dangerous for guests, as many viewers quickly pointed out.

(Pins are not advertised as skin safe. I wore clean, new pins with normal earring backs. My ears did not react but do this at your own risk. You know your own skin so if yours are sensitive avoid trying this out)

The video was also posted on Instagram, and viewers immediately flooded the comments with opinions against this “hack.” Other former Disney cast members advised viewers against wearing pins as earrings, as official Disney Pins have spikes in their backs that could hurt guests’ lobes.

Additionally, viewers commented that Disney Pins are not made from a material that is safe to wear as body jewelry and could cause injuries, infections, and other afflictions if used as such.

One TikTok user commented that, due to this hack, Disney would end up putting a disclaimer on the packaging of all Disney Pins, urging guests not to wear Disney Pins as jewelry. The former Disney cast member boldly responded, “And I’ll still do it.”

Following the massive backlash, the former Disney cast member was forced to turn off the comments of her Instagram post and edit the captions on both platforms to add a disclaimer.

On Instagram, the user added, “*I used new pins with normal earring backs* do this at your own risk, for the ppl all upset in the comments.” On TikTok, the disclaimer reads: “Pins are not advertised as skin safe. I wore clean, new pins with normal earring backs. My ears did not react but do this at your own risk. You know your own skin so if yours are sensitive avoid trying this out.”

While Disney Pins are irresistible collectible items, they are not intended to be worn as jewelry. If you want to show off your collection, you can find a wide variety of lanyards and bags across Magic Kingdom, Disney’s Animal Kingdom, Disney’s Hollywood Studios, EPCOT, and Disney Springs.

Additionally, guests can engage in the beloved practice of Disney Pin Trading, where they can trade pins from boards across Disney World and, starting April 7, directly with cast members wearing official Disney Pin Trading lanyards and pouches.

If you haven’t heard about Disney Pin trading, the cherished Disney tradition introduced as we know it in October 1999 with the launch of the Millenium celebration, lets guests buy pins at the official shops across Walt Disney World Resort’s theme parks, Disney Resort Hotels, and even at Disney Springs to trade with cast members and fellow collectors to watch their collection grow.

What do you think about this divisive “hack”? Would you ever try it?
