Erasing History: 7 Nostalgic Disney World Attractions Facing Permanent Closures as IP Takeovers Loom
A day at Disney World now revolves more around movie franchises than ever before. From the moment guests enter the parks, they are surrounded by attractions inspired by Frozen (2013), Guardians of the Galaxy (2014), Toy Story (1995), and Star Wars. Disney has spent years reshaping the resort around recognizable characters and major IPs, and that strategy has dramatically changed the parks that longtime fans once knew.
Some guests love the newer direction. Others continue to watch as classic attractions slowly lose their place inside the parks.
Several rides now feel especially vulnerable as Disney continues modernizing all four parks.

Disney Has Already Retired Several Major Fan Favorites
Longtime Disney World visitors have watched as a growing number of nostalgic attractions have disappeared over the years.
The Great Movie Ride once represented the heart of Disney’s Hollywood Studios before Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway replaced it. EPCOT lost Maelstrom to Frozen Ever After, while Splash Mountain transformed into Tiana’s Bayou Adventure.
Hollywood Studios also permanently closed Muppet*Vision 3D in 2025 as Disney moves toward a Monsters, Inc.-focused future.
Animal Kingdom continues changing as well. Disney is currently phasing out DINOSAUR and large portions of DinoLand U.S.A. to make way for Tropical Americas.
That history has convinced many fans that other older attractions could eventually face similar changes.

EPCOT Attractions Continue Drawing Speculation
Gran Fiesta Tour starring the Three Caballeros continues generating heavy speculation among Disney fans.
Many believe Disney could eventually transform the attraction into a full Coco (2017) experience. The Mexico Pavilion already fits naturally with the film’s setting, and Disney has shown it is willing to update older World Showcase rides when a stronger franchise becomes available.
Mission: SPACE also feels vulnerable for a different reason.
The attraction remains one of EPCOT’s most divisive rides because of its intensity and reputation for causing motion sickness. At the same time, the attraction lacks the recognizable characters Disney now prioritizes across the park.
Journey Into Imagination with Figment also continues fueling rumors.
Fans still adore Figment, but many guests admit the current version of the ride feels outdated compared to newer Disney experiences. Some hope Disney reinvests heavily in the attraction. Others fear Disney could eventually attach a much larger franchise to the pavilion.

Magic Kingdom Attractions Could Also Change
Tomorrowland Speedway frequently appears in replacement conversations among Disney fans.
The attraction originally represented futuristic transportation, but gas-powered cars no longer feel especially forward-thinking to many guests. Some fans believe Disney could eventually replace the Speedway with a Stitch-themed Tomorrowland attraction instead.
The character already has a long history in Magic Kingdom, and many guests believe a more chaotic, space-inspired experience would fit Tomorrowland better than the current speedway concept.
Fantasyland also continues generating occasional rumors.
Some guests believe The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh could eventually evolve into a more interactive experience inspired by “Playdate with Winnie the Pooh” and Disney Jr.-style entertainment.
The Barnstormer also feels vulnerable because Disney increasingly prioritizes attractions tied to larger franchises.

Star Tours Feels Caught Between Two Eras
Before Galaxy’s Edge opened, Star Tours served as Disney’s main Star Wars attraction.
Now, the simulator attraction sits near one of Disney’s most immersive lands. Guests can pilot the Millennium Falcon and experience Rise of the Resistance nearby, making Star Tours feel somewhat disconnected from the larger Galaxy’s Edge storytelling.
Disney still refreshes scenes in the attraction, but many fans continue to wonder whether its future remains fully secure.
Disney’s Priorities Have Become Clear
None of these attractions has officially been confirmed for replacement.
Still, Disney’s recent history makes it easy to see why fans continue to speculate about what could disappear next.
The company has fully embraced franchise-driven storytelling throughout Walt Disney World, and older attractions without major IP connections naturally attract more attention whenever expansion rumors begin circulating.
For longtime fans, that creates an uncomfortable reality.
Even some of Disney World’s most nostalgic attractions no longer feel untouchable.
