Adventures by Disney Australia Trip Review: Unveiling the Experience

Adventures by Disney (AbD) offers a 10-day guided tour of Australia, allowing you to experience its stunning landscapes and vibrant cities. This review contains my own opinions and perspectives. Disney did not compensate me for this review, nor did I receive any compensation from Disney travel agents or other third parties.

My AbD Australia land adventure to the Land Down Under occurred between December 28 to January 6. That is relevant to this particular trip review for two reasons. First we had a unique opportunity to ring in the New Year while in Melbourne.

My family wearing "Happy New Year Melbourne" hats and glowing necklaces are smiling at the camera. In the background, there are New Year's fireworks illuminating the night sky next to tall buildings, capturing a magical moment from their Adventures by Disney Australia trip.

As I will share below, this experience illustrated our Disney Adventure Guide’s seizing on an opportunity to create unique magic specifically for our trip. While your AbD trip won’t be exactly like mine, it’s very likely that whoever you get as an Adventure Guide will find many ways to make your trip unique, with a desire to add a little extra Pixie Dust to it.

Next, our adventure coincided with the aftermath of Cyclone Jasper, a category 5 storm that created the worst flooding in over a century. The cyclone struck Cairns and the neighboring regions less than two weeks before our arrival. In case you are interested, here is some amazing drone footage of the Cyclone Jasper flooding.

I mention this as it illustrates better than anything how, despite events out of Disney’s control, updates to the itinerary will be made without the guest lifting a finger. In our case, the roads to Hartley’s Crocodile Adventures were not open, but instead of leaving a hole in the schedule, we visited Cairns Aquarium.

This guided tour is designed for Disney fans of all ages and provides a unique and unforgettable experience. In this article, I will discuss the highlights of the Adventures by Disney Australia trip, giving you a comprehensive overview of the itinerary, inclusions, and the adventure guides accompanying us on this incredible journey.

The 10-day Adventures by Disney Australia trip is a guided tour that delivers an exciting and immersive experience for travelers. As of the publication date, prices start from $8,069 per child and $8,199 per adult. This AbD trip offers a range of activities, accommodations, dining options, and unique experiences that cater to the interests and preferences of every traveler.

One of the main highlights of the Adventures by Disney Australia trip is the all-inclusive nature of the package. The tour includes accommodations, most meals, and transportation within Australia (excluding airfare to and from Australia). This means that you can sit back, relax, and focus on enjoying your adventure without worrying about your trip’s logistics.

The Adventures by Disney Australia Trip covers three of Australia’s most iconic locations: Cairns, Melbourne, and Sydney. Each destination offers a unique blend of natural wonders, cultural experiences, and exciting activities. From exploring the Great Barrier Reef to discovering the vibrant city life of Melbourne and Sydney, this Disney tour allows you to immerse yourself in the beauty and diversity of Australia.

Throughout the journey, you will be accompanied by two Adventure Guides who are experts in providing entertaining, engaging, and culturally enriching experiences. Typically, this means one local guide and one guide from the U.S. Our guides, Melissa and Kim, played an important role in making this a special trip.

These guides are both knowledgeable about the destinations and passionate about creating memorable moments for every traveler. They will be there to ensure that your trip runs smoothly, answer any questions, and provide insider tips and insights into the local culture and attractions.

Cairns: Days 1 to 3

Upon arriving at Cairns and being whisked to the Crystalbrook Flynn Resort, we were warmly greeted by our Disney Adventure Guides, Melissa and Kim.

The Crystalbrook Flynn Resort, our hotel in Cairns, includes an extensive breakfast buffet. Breakfast buffets have been one of the comforting inclusions of every AbD trip I’ve been on, given that it’s never certain that each family member will enjoy the local cuisine. But as you can see from the options below, even the less adventurous travelers can probably find some form of comfort food.

Bottom reveals a dining area with wooden tables, chairs, hanging lamps, and large windows offering a stunning view of the sea and trees.

The first day in Cairns would normally have started with Hartley’s Crocodile Adventure, where you can get up close and personal with crocodiles and other wildlife. But as I shared in the intro, we instead got the opportunity to visit the Cairns Aquarium, which was only a short walk from the hotel. At the aquarium, we saw the marine life that inhabits the Great Barrier Reef.

Speaking of the Great Barrier Reef, no trip to Cairns would be complete without a visit to this natural wonder. You can snorkel through the vibrant coral reefs and immerse yourself in the underwater world of marine life.

We boarded the Sunlover Catamaran, which took us through the Coral Sea to one of the world’s most extraordinary natural wonders. The Great Barrier Reef, visible even from space, is a sprawling habitat of colorful marine life.

Although our group of 39 from Adventures by Disney was sizable, we were among nearly 300 passengers on the boat. Disney provided a reserved seating area for our group, ensuring we could enjoy the voyage together. It’s important for fellow Disney adventurers to note that this part of the trip was not exclusive to our group. The specific destination for our aquatic adventure was Moore Reef, a vibrant part of the Outer Reef.

Upon reaching the outer reef, our base of operations was an impressive floating pontoon. Here, a marine biologist greeted us, ready to guide our exploration of this underwater marvel. For those keen on snorkeling, it was an opportunity to get an up-close view of the reef’s vibrant ecosystem, teeming with fish, starfish, and mollusks, and maybe even a glimpse of turtles, dolphins, or sharks. For those preferring to stay dry, the semi-submersible submarine offered an unforgettable underwater cruise, bringing us face-to-face with the reef and its inhabitants.

Despite Cyclone Jasper passing the Great Barrier Reef a few weeks earlier, there were no visible signs of damage to the reef. In fact, we learned during the trip that the Great Barrier Reef is actually in better shape now than it has been in years past.

The final day in Cairns includes a visit to Rainforestation Nature Park. Here, you can immerse yourself in the lush rainforest. Our private tour, led by local Djabugay guides – the original inhabitants of the area – was an enlightening journey through Aboriginal dance, song, storytelling, artwork, and artifacts. The highlight of Rainforestation Nature Park was the interactive experiences.

Midday, we ventured to Kuranda Village for lunch followed by some free time to explore the Kuranda Village. The afternoon was marked by a journey on the Skyrail, stretching from Kuranda to Caravonica. Gliding over Australia’s World Heritage-listed tropical rainforest canopy, the Skyrail provided us with breathtaking views and an unparalleled perspective of this lush landscape.

Capping off the day the Adventure Guides organized a special Junior Adventure Disney Movie Night, while the adults had dinner at Flynn’s Italian restaurant.

Melbourne: Days 4 to 6

After exploring Cairns, it’s time to head to Melbourne. You will take a flight to Melbourne and check in at the Park Hyatt Melbourne, a luxury hotel located in the heart of the city. From here, you will have the opportunity to explore the vibrant city of Melbourne and its surrounding areas.

As I previously mentioned, the breakfast buffets at each location are an integral part of the experience, and Melbourne’s breakfast options were the best of the three hotels.

During your time in Melbourne, you will visit the Old Melbourne Gaol and City Watch House, where you can wander through the historic cells and gain insights into Melbourne’s colorful past. You will also have the opportunity to enjoy a delightful meal at Taxi Kitchen, which offers stunning views of the city skyline and Yarra river.

For us, this was New Year’s Eve, so despite a long day of travel, we decided to stay up and welcome in the New Year. Our Adventure Guides, Melissa and Kim helped organize the walk to the city park which was the heart of Melbourne’s New Year celebration.

To add a touch of adventure, the tour includes a kayaking excursion on the Yarra River, allowing guests to admire Melbourne’s stunning skyline from a unique perspective. The Melbourne Eureka Skydeck offers panoramic views of the city plus The Edge a VR Plank experience. Next, a guided walking tour takes guests through the hidden street art hotspots, uncovering the vibrant urban culture that defines Melbourne.

Bluey fans will appreciate the Aussie’s love for their native blue heller, Bluey, as shown with the Christmas display still up in this large Meyer’s storefront. We also had lunch that day at Din Tai Fung. Not only was it a standout dining experience on this trip, but I feel it was among the best of any Adventures by Disney trips I’ve taken.

A collage shows Bluey's Christmas window displays at Myer. The top sections feature colorful, festive scenes with Bluey characters and decorations. The bottom section depicts people admiring the store displays from the street, reminiscent of an Adventures by Disney Australia trip review during the holidays.

Known for its exquisite dumplings, Din Tai Fung offered a meal that was nothing short of exceptional. The chain’s reputation for quality is well-deserved, as evidenced by the Michelin star awarded to its Hong Kong location.

The tour takes guests to the Ballarat Wildlife Park for a dose of wildlife encounters. No Australian vacation would be complete without this stop, as guests can get up close to native Australian animals, including kangaroos, wallabies, and adorable koalas. In fact, feeding the kangaroos will no doubt be among the highlights of the trip for most kids (or kids at heart).

Sovereign Hill offers a journey back in time to the gold rush era, with its beautifully recreated 1850s streets, gold mining demonstrations, and historic buildings. A visit to the Napier Hotel, a thrilling Mine Adventure, and a candy-making demonstration complete with free samples round out the experience.

Sydney: Days 7 to 10

From Melbourne, you will take a short flight to Sydney, the final stop on the Adventures by Disney Australia Trip. You will be staying at the luxurious Shangri-La Hotel, which offers breathtaking views of Sydney Harbor, the iconic Sydney Opera House, and “42 Wallaby Way” the fictional address made famous from Finding Nemo, all from the rooftop restaurant.

To round out my coverage of the breakfast buffet options, breakfast was served this time from the previously mentioned rooftop restaurant.

The Sydney portion of the tour includes visits to the Royal Botanic Gardens, where guests can explore the lush greenery and enjoy a leisurely stroll. An exhilarating Harbour Jet Boat Ride allows guests to experience the thrill of zipping through the harbor, providing a unique perspective of Sydney’s famous landmarks.

In my mind, the Harbour Jet Boat Ride is perhaps one of the most underrated but enjoyable parts of the entire trip. Not only is it a blast, but by day 7, you will have already become fairly familiar with your fellow adventurers, making the experience even more fun than it otherwise might be. During the Jet Boat Ride, you will get your closest encounter with the building that inspired 42 Wallaby Way in Finding Nemo.

Day 8, the adventure continues as guests embark on a journey to Fitzroy Falls, where they can marvel at the cascading waterfalls and immerse themselves in the beauty of the Australian countryside. A canoeing experience on the Wingcarribee River offers a serene (assuming you don’t capsize your canoe) and picturesque escape. A visit to Berrima Village introduces guests to the charm of this historic town, followed by an alpaca farm visit.

If the Harbour Jet Boat Ride was my underrated highlight, the alpaca farm visit balanced the scales, being the most disappointing part of the trip. That said, I’ve spoken to many guests both on my own trip and who have attended other Adventure by Disney Australia trips, and they had the exact opposite reaction. So, as with everything, YMMV.

The tour’s grand finale is a private tour of the Sydney Opera House, one of the world’s most iconic architectural marvels. Guests have the opportunity to explore the backstage area and gain insights into the rich history and cultural significance of this renowned landmark. The tour concludes with a farewell dinner at the Sydney Opera House, providing the perfect opportunity to savor your time at this iconic site and bid farewell to newfound friends.

The Adventures by Disney Australia tour offers a truly enchanting experience that combines Disney’s magic and service standards with Australia’s awe-inspiring beauty. From exploring the Great Barrier Reef to discovering the cultural treasures of Melbourne and Sydney, every moment of the trip is filled with fun and adventure.

The expertise of the Adventure Guides, attention to detail, and itinerary combine to create memories that will last a lifetime. On a personal note, visiting Australia has been a lifelong bucket list adventure, and I’m very happy with my choice to experience the country with Adventures by Disney.

Is Adventures by Disney Australia worth the price?

The Adventures by Disney Australia Trip offers a comprehensive and all-inclusive experience that covers accommodations, most meals, transportation within Australia, and a range of exciting activities and unique experiences. While the prices may seem high, it is important to consider the value you receive in return.

Adventures by Disney trips are family-focused adventures. You receive VIP access, private events, cultural experiences with local experts, and admission fees to performances and attractions. Your experience will often include things you simply cannot do on your own, regardless of your budget. It’s my experience that in most countries, hotels and tour operators want to associate themselves with the Disney brand, and either out of their own willingness or Disney’s ability to negotiate, you will receive experiences that are truly unique.

While each person’s ability to afford an Adventures by Disney trip will vary, I personally believe these trips are worth every penny.

What activities are included in Adventures by Disney Australia?

The Adventures by Disney Australia Trip includes various activities catering to different interests. Some of the activities included are snorkeling at the Great Barrier Reef, visiting wildlife parks, exploring historic sites, kayaking on the Yarra River, taking a jet boat ride in Sydney Harbour, and going on guided walking tours. These activities are designed to provide an immersive and diverse experience showcasing Australia’s natural wonders, cultural heritage, and exciting adventures.

Why choose Adventures by Disney?

Adventures by Disney offers a unique blend of Disney magic and immersive travel experiences. The Adventures by Disney combines the expertise and attention to detail that Disney is known for with the wonders and excitement of exploring a new destination. You can expect high-quality accommodations, delicious dining options, and expertly crafted itineraries by choosing Adventures by Disney.

But most of all the Adventure Guides ensure that every aspect of your trip runs smoothly, allowing you to relax and enjoy your adventure. I’ve had personal experience in most of the Adventures by Disney trips that I’ve taken in which something went wrong behind the scenes. Probably more often than I even realize, the Adventure Guides work to ensure everything is perfect. Often I was barely aware of the problem because of how well-oiled the scheduling process has become, but when I knew there was a problem it was often after a new solution was already found. I would say 90% of the time, the alternative solution or itinerary is better than the original option. This speaks to Disney’s understanding of hospitality and service dedicated to ensuring every traveler has a memorable and unforgettable experience.

Best Time to Visit Australia

My trip took place during the last few days of December and into January, and I couldn’t have asked for a better time as that is summertime in the southern hemisphere. But keep in mind that December to February is going to be the busiest time of year for travel in Australia, and even though the weather will be a little cooler, the flights to and from Australia will be less the further away from the summer months you plan your trip.

Cairns is so close to the equator that regardless of which time of year you travel, you can expect warm weather, and the Spring and Autumn months will give you the dry season. But for Syndey and Melbourne, which are considerably further south than Cairns, weather becomes more of a factor throughout the year.

Do I have to be a Disney fan to enjoy Adventures by Disney?

Unlike a Disney Cruise or Disney Park vacation, you don’t need to be a Disney fan to enjoy Adventures by Disney. While the brand and name might suggest a strong connection to Disney’s characters and themes, Adventures by Disney is primarily focused on providing guided group travel experiences to various destinations around the world. The trips are designed to offer immersive and culturally rich experiences, often including exclusive access to sites, VIP experiences, and high-quality accommodations and dining.

Here are some key points about Adventures by Disney that might appeal to non-Disney fans:

  1. Expertly Planned Itineraries: Each trip type (land adventure, river cruise, jet adventure, private adventure, etc) is carefully crafted to offer unique, enriching experiences with knowledgeable guides.
  2. Cultural Immersion: The focus is on authentic cultural experiences, local traditions, and historical sites NOT Disney characters or similar as you would expect at Disney World and other Disney parks and experiences.
  3. Family-Friendly: The trips are designed to be enjoyable for all ages, making them a good option for family vacations. Each trip will have carefully considered how to craft an equally appealing adventure to an adult as it is to the junior adventurer.
  4. High-Quality Service: Disney’s reputation for exceptional service extends to these adventures, ensuring a smooth and enjoyable travel experience.

While Disney’s attention to detail and quality enhances these trips, the experiences themselves are diverse and not centered around Disney characters or themes.

Does Adventures by Disney include airfare?

Adventures by Disney Australia Trip (and a few others) includes air transportation within Australia but does not include airfare to and from Australia. Travelers are responsible for their own airfare arrangements.

  1. Great info, Kurt – i enjoyed your review. We are booked for this ABD in October 2025, but the Adult Only version. I noticed a few differences between your itinerary and ours – they took the alpaca farm off the itinerary and added a surf lesson and we’re staying at the Four Seasons in Sydney instead of the Shangri-La. I have a few questions for you…any recommendations for restaurants for any of the “on your own” meals? Also, did anyone do the Sydney Harbour Bridge Climb in your group? I just emailed the tour guide to ask if we could do that on Day 9 since it looks like we have morning and afternoon to explore on our own. We’re SO looking forward to the trip!
