A Hidden Disney World Resort Reserved for Military Members and Their Families

When planning a Disney vacation, most people are aware of the amazing Walt Disney World Resort hotels, known for their magical perks and convenient locations. However, one resort is less talked about and largely off-limits to the general public: Shades of Green, an exclusive retreat for members of the United States Armed Forces and their families.

Nestled in the Magic Kingdom Resort area, this hidden gem offers a unique Disney experience that combines accessibility with a sense of exclusivity. Whether you’re eligible to stay or simply curious about this resort, here’s everything you need to know about Shades of Green.

A Secret History: From Golf Resort to Military Getaway

Shades of Green has a fascinating history. Originally built in 1973 as part of Disney’s efforts to expand its accommodations, the property began as a modest golf resort. Known as Disney’s Golf Resort, it featured just 151 rooms, catering to visitors eager to enjoy Disney’s championship courses.

In 1986, the resort underwent a makeover, adopting a Snow White theme and a new name: The Disney Inn. However, the property’s destiny changed in the 1990s, when the United States Army sought to establish an Armed Forces Recreation Center on domestic soil. Disney’s offer to lease The Disney Inn was an ideal fit, and in 1994, it officially became Shades of Green.

Two years later, the U.S. Army purchased the property outright, making Shades of Green a true military-owned facility. Although it is no longer managed by Disney, the resort remains on Disney-owned land and offers many of the benefits you’d expect from a Disney property.
