Short Waits Reported as Monsters After Dark Soft-Opens Early

Halloween season at Disneyland Resort got an unexpected head start yesterday when Guardians of the Galaxy – Monsters After Dark soft-opened ahead of its official August 22 return.

Guests in Disney California Adventure were caught off guard when the attraction’s Halloween overlay kicked in earlier than expected, offering a thrilling — and far less crowded — chance to join Rocket on his daring rescue mission.

Short Waits Thanks to a Surprise Start

Unlike a scheduled debut that would have drawn big crowds, yesterday’s unannounced soft opening meant many guests were able to ride with shorter-than-normal standby waits. With no Lightning Lane offered, the experience felt more spontaneous — a rare Disney moment where being in the right place at the right time paid off.

At Walt Disney World, anticipation for the Beak and Barrel announcement caused such a surge of online traffic that Disney’s website briefly crashed under the pressure. By contrast, Disneyland’s approach with Monsters After Dark was the exact opposite: no advance warning, no buildup, just a surprise soft opening that unfolded seamlessly.

Instead of long virtual waits, guests who happened to be in the park enjoyed a smooth rollout, shorter standby lines, and a spooky seasonal treat without the stress of overwhelming crowds.

Soft openings also serve as operational tests, and yesterday was no exception. Guests reported experiencing the “B mode” pre-show, which is used when the Rocket animatronic isn’t functioning. Instead, the storyline continued with alternate effects — still immersive, but notably different from the standard sequence. These previews also allow Disney to iron out technical challenges before the official launch.

From 3PM to 2PM: A Shift in Schedule

Yesterday, the app listed the overlay starting at 3:00 PM, yet guests shared that it actually began even earlier than that. Today, however, the Disneyland app shows the attraction scheduled to switch to Halloween mode at 2:00 PM, hinting that Disney may experiment with different start times as part of the testing process.

Looking Ahead

While Disney still officially lists August 22 as the return date for Guardians of the Galaxy – Monsters After Dark, the surprise soft opening raises new questions. With the overlay also appearing in today’s schedule, it’s unclear how long this early run will continue,  or whether it’s just a limited technical preview.

With only a week to go before the official launch, guests may find themselves with unexpected chances to experience Rocket’s daring rescue before the Halloween season “officially” begins.
