Gina Carano Launches Legal Battle Against Disney and LucasFilm, Backed by Elon Musk

Former star of Disney Plus’ The Mandalorian, Gina Carano, who was fired from the show after making comments comparing Republicans in America to Jewish people during the Holocaust, has filed a lawsuit in Federal Court claiming wrongful termination and discrimination. She is seeking an injunction from the court that would force Disney and LucasFilm to rehire her for the Star Wars show.

In a twist to this story, X (formerly Twitter) announced that it would be footing Carano’s legal bills. Elon Musk had pledged to X users that he would pay their legal bills if they were discriminated against because of their activity on the social media platform.

In a statement, X’s head of business operations, Joe Benarroch, said,

As a sign of X Corp’s commitment to free speech, we’re proud to provide financial support for Gina Carano’s lawsuit, empowering her to seek vindication of her free speech rights on X and the ability to work without bullying, harassment, or discrimination.

LucasFilm and Disney announced that Carano would not return to The Mandalorian in 2021 after Carano took to X and said:

Most people today don’t realize that to get to the point where Naxi soldiers could easily round up thousands of Jews, the government first made their own neighbors hate them simply for being Jews. How is that any different from hating someone for their political views?

In her lawsuit against the Walt Disney Company, Carano claimed that LucasFilm and Disney harassed her for not conforming to their opinions on social issues. She claims that after being fired, Disney and LucasFilm harassed her and defamed her reputation.

Carano said that Disney and LucasFilms turned a blind eye to male cast members who harassed right-leaning politicians online, including her co-star Pedro Pascal. She specifically pointed to a post on X in which Pascal compared former President Donald Trump to Adolf Hitler.

Carano is seeking $75,000 in damages and wants to be recast in the Disney Plus show. She said in a statement:

Some of us have been unjustly singled out, harassed, persecuted and had our livelihoods stripped away because we dared to encourage conversation, asked questions, and refused to go along with the mob.

After taking over Twitter (now X) last year, Elon Musk pledged that he would support any users who were being harassed or faced discrimination for what they have said on the social media platform. Musk said that he would go after any company and would pay any price to fight what he perceives as discrimination. Carano’s case is the first time Musk has spent money defending someone fired over something they said on X.

Carano was told that if she met with representatives from the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Discrimination and apologized, she could keep her job. After she refused, she was offered an opportunity to meet with LucasFilm President Kathleen Kennedy and members of the LGBTQ+ community. She was again refused and was terminated shortly after.
