Disney Shuts Down Monorail System, Turns Guests Away
Disneyland Resort’s Monorail closed without warning on Wednesday morning, stranding guests at Downtown Disney and forcing them to walk to Disneyland Park’s main entrance rather than ride the tram to Tomorrowland.
X (formerly known as Twitter) user @laughingplace documented the closure with photos of signs turning Disney Park guests away:
Strolling through Downtown Disney unexpectedly. Monorail is temporarily not operating this morning.
Disneyland Resort offered no explanation for the February 25 shutdown.
False Reopening
The Monorail briefly appeared operational 30 minutes later. @laughingplace posted:
Showing as operating in the app now.
The reopening didn’t last. By the time this article was published, the Disneyland Resort app still showed the Monorail as “temporarily closed.”
Guests continue walking between the Downtown Disney District and Disneyland Park’s main entrance.
March 30 Extended Closure Coming
Wednesday’s surprise shutdown comes five weeks before a planned indefinite closure starting March 30. Disneyland Resort announced earlier this month that the Monorail and Roger Rabbit’s Car Toon Spin would close on that date for refurbishment with no reopening timeline.
Disneyland Resort’s refurbishment calendar extends through early April, listing the Monorail as closed throughout that period. Construction permits reveal plans for upgrades to support pillars and electrical work, though the scope of the refurbishment remains unclear.
Operational Problems Suspected
The abrupt Wednesday closure, followed by a brief reopening, then another shutdown, suggests mechanical issues with the 2.5-mile transportation system. Whether Wednesday’s problems are connected to the March 30 refurbishment or separate mechanical matters is unknown.
The Monorail provides direct access from Downtown Disney to Tomorrowland, bypassing Disneyland Park’s main entrance. Closures force all guests through the primary gates, undoubtedly causing congestion at the entrance.
