Ranking Disney’s Princesses from Least to Most Annoying: A Controversial List

When we think about Disney princesses, we typically think of beautiful young women, many of whom don’t fit into the world they find themselves living in. They have big dreams and big goals, but they don’t really know how to make those dreams become a reality. They also usually have really cute sidekicks who are the highlight of the movie.

Disney princesses are always good people, but that doesn’t mean that they don’t get annoying. They act in a certain way or do a certain thing that can set off a chain of terrible events. And, for many of us, as we get older, we pick on the more annoying habits of these princesses. Heck, sometimes we even understand where the villain is coming from!

Here are some of Disney’s least and most annoying princesses.

Pocahontas

Pocahontas is an interesting Disney princess, not just because she is Disney’s first and only Native American princess, but also because she is the only Disney princess based on a real person. We do not know exactly when she was born, but historians estimate that it was around 1596. We do know that she died in England in 1617.

For the purposes of this article, we will focus on the Disney-fied version of Pocahontas, who is definitely one of Disney’s least — if not the very least — annoying princesses. She is a typical teenager who wants more freedom, to be able to live the life she dreams of and to see what is around the riverbend.

Parents often say that children cannot understand how important things are or the ramifications of certain actions. And Pocahontas sort of lives up to that belief. She knows that the English settlers can be dangerous, but she thinks that if everyone just talks, they can find common ground and get along.

Of course, things do not go smoothly. A young English settler kills one of Pocahontas’ people, the man her father (the Chief) wanted her to marry. However, in the end, she does manage to save the life of John Smith and the villain — Governor Ratcliffe — gets exactly what he deserves.

While the first film looks like Pocahontas will fall in love and live happily ever after with John Smith, the second film — Pocahontas 2: Journey to a New World (1998) — shows that she actually marries John Rolfe. That is the man she married in real life, but they were only married for three years before she died.

Jasmine – Aladdin

It’s definitely easy to feel bad for Jasmine from Disney’s 1992 film, Aladdin. Sure, she lives in a palace, but she isn’t really ever able to leave. She doesn’t have any friends, except for her pet tiger, Rajah. On top of that, her father is constantly forcing her to meet different men from neighboring kingdoms until she can find one that she will agree to marry. On top of that, she does not have a mother — like many other Disney princesses — who can help her along her journey.

So, we can see why Princess Jasmine would be a little angry and sassy, but she crosses the annoying line when she sneaks out of the castle and heads to the marketplace. While there, she takes an apple off of a fruit cart and gives it to a hungry young boy. She then begins to walk away, but the fruit vendor asks if she is going to pay for the apple. Jasmine seems confused and almost has her hand cut off before Aladdin steps in and saves her.

At the time, Princess Jasmine is second in line for the throne. Should something happen to her father, the Sultan, it appears that she would take over. But she doesn’t know how money works. She doesn’t know how a business works. She doesn’t seem to understand much of anything about the lives of her people, yet she is expected to lead them?

How has Princess Jasmine existed for that long, and she has absolutely no idea about these things? Does she not know that they pay taxes? Where does she think the money in the kingdom comes from? So, it’s not that Jasmine is completely annoying, more along the annoying lines because she just doesn’t understand life.

Tiana – The Princess and the Frog

Princess Tiana from Disney’s The Princess and the Frog  (2009) is another one of those princesses who isn’t outright annoying, but she sure does have some qualities that can make her friends and family roll their eyes.

Tiana is a very hard worker because she wants to fulfill the dream she and her father had before he passed away. Their dream was to open a restaurant that would become the highlight of New Orleans. And Tiana will do anything to make that dream a reality. She works all night and all day, and people can’t get enough of her mouthwatering beignets.

The annoying part about Tiana is that she doesn’t really know what it is like to be a good and supportive friend to those around her. Her friends love her and want to spend time with her. Her friends come to the diner she works out and beg her to spend some time with them. But she is so busy working, they are forced to go without her once again. One friend even says that the group should have expected it because she never spends time with them.

Friends and the support they give are really important. And they will only take a back seat for so long. Tiana risks losing almost all of her support if she doesn’t show her friends that they matter to her.

She also has a bit of a high and mighty complex when it comes to how hard she works. But that is easier to forgive, since she mainly reserves that attitude for Prince Naveen. That is easy to understand, though, since he is used to not having to do anything and thinks that working is reserved for the lower classes.

Snow White

Okay, so, I will be upfront about my main dislike for Snow White — her voice. It’s incredibly high and almost nasally, and it seems like Disney worked incredibly hard to find a woman with the most innocent-sounding voice imaginable. But the voice only serves to be grating whenever she speaks.

Voice aside, Snow White’s main annoyance comes from the fact that she is Disney’s oldest princess, and that is not her fault. But when Walt Disney Animation released Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs in 1937, the role of women in society was very different. Add to that the original story was written by the Brothers Grimm in 1812, and it can be a little easier to understand the Disney princess.

Snow White had absolutely zero goals and zero ambitions in life. In fact, things really just happened to her, instead of her actually doing something. Her one and only goal, despite her young age, was to find a prince who would fall in love with her. But then, she begins to drastically creep up on the annoyance scale.

The seven dwarfs were doing very well and living very happy lives, then this princess just blew in like a hurricane. She tries to help them, but she doesn’t really know what she is doing, so she enlists the help of the woodland creatures to do the cooking and cleaning. The dwarfs give her everything and even risk their lives as they try to save her from the Evil Queen.

And how does Snow White repay them for everything they did for her? By abandoning them. As soon as a handsome prince comes along, Snow White leaves them and goes off to live happily ever after. What happens to the dwarfs? We don’t know because Snow White found her prince and nothing else really mattered.

And let’s not forget, Snow White does not know this handsome prince. He falls in love with her while she is asleep, and then she falls in love with him as soon as she wakes up.

Belle – Beauty and the Beast

It’s not a secret that Belle from Disney’s 1991 film, Beauty and the Beast, doesn’t love living in her small French town. She has big dreams for a life outside of the village. But when it comes to voicing her discontent, she isn’t exactly very nice about it. And that is why she is landing at a higher spot on the annoyance scale.

During Belle’s first song, she basically calls the rest of the townspeople simple-minded. Like they don’t know anything other than what they are doing. Sure, she doesn’t know that they are under a curse that prevents them from remembering the prince and the people who work for him. But that still doesn’t mean that she can just about their boring lives like she is better than that.

Let’s not forget to ask: What does Belle contribute to her town? She doesn’t have a job and doesn’t appear to do any volunteer work. Her father is an inventor, but we don’t see that making him any money. So, how do they afford to live? How do they afford the bread that the baker always bakes? How do they afford their house? It seems like they need the townspeople more than Belle seems to think they do. She only reads books, and, of course, sings about how boring the townspeople are.

Of course, we do have to give Belle a break because the townspeople whom Belle sings about seem to not be on her side very much easier. They think that she is weird because of how much she loves to read books. Don’t forget, Gaston even asks how she is capable of reading a book that doesn’t have any pictures.

And, of course, we can’t discount how much Bell is loved by Disney fans. There is a reason that Belle is such a fan-favorite Disney princess.

Merida – Brave

It is completely understandable why Merida from Disney and Pixar’s Brave (2012) is upset with almost everything and everyone. No woman wants to be told that she has to marry a man, regardless of what her hopes and dreams are. And it’s even more admirable that Merida enters the contest so she can win her own hand.

HOWEVER…

Merida earns a high score on the annoying Disney princess scale due to what she does after the competition. She is so upset that her mother is insisting that the Scottish princess find a prince that Merida goes to an evil sorceress. The witch gives her a cake to feed to Elinor. Mind you, Merida has absolutely zero idea what is in this cake. For all she knows, the witch could have put poison in that cake that would kill Elinor. But Merida is so immature that she feeds her mother the cake anyway.

Thankfully, the cake was not poisoned, but it did turn Elinor into a bear. Because of Merida’s immaturity, her mother was almost killed by the king and almost permanently became a bear. And all because Merida was mad.

While it might be easy to understand why Merida was upset, we also have to remember that her mother — Queen Elinor — was not in an easy position either. Her mother doesn’t want Merida to marry someone and be miserable for the rest of her life, but Elinor has her people to think of. She has to try to balance out what Merida wants with what is best for the people of clan Dunbroch.

Anna – Frozen

It could not have been easy for Anna, who grew up in the kingdom of Arendelle in the 2013 Disney movie, Frozen. Princess Anna loved her sister Elsa so much, but one day, Elsa just turned her back on Anna. Elsa remained locked in her room and Anna could never figure out why her sister stopped wanting to spend time with her. Then, when their parents passed away in a shipwreck, Anna found herself truly alone, without a sister to turn to.

And just like Merida… HOWEVER…

Anna completely lost her mind during Elsa’s coronation, when Elsa (rightly) told her younger sister that she could not marry a man that she just met. Anna didn’t want to hear Elsa’s good advice and started a fight in the middle of a ball. Anna could not control herself and completely freaked out on her sister, defending the man she met about half an ago. The fight is so bad that it triggers Elsa’s powers, which get worse with her emotions.

That leads to Elsa accidentally puts Arendelle in a state of permanent winter, even though it’s summer. Elsa runs away to live by herself in an ice kingdom — since the cold never bothered her anyway — so she doesn’t hurt anyone else. Her powers are revealed to everyone in attendance at the coronation, and a group of angry men go out and try to hunt Elsa down.

Elsa and Anna both almost die, and it’s at the hands of the man Anna was so intent on marrying, Prince Hans. So, Elsa’s advice wasn’t so crazy, was it Anna? Thankfully, Anna grew up and realized that Elsa just wanted what was best for her. But dang, her annoying behavior certainly could have turned out A LOT worse.

Ariel – The Little Mermaid

With this list, it was incredibly easy to know who was going to be deemed Disney’s most annoying princess. That would be Princess Ariel in the iconic 1989 Disney film, The Little Mermaid.

When we were younger, it was so easy to shout, “You go girl!” when Ariel yelled at her father that she was 16 years old and no longer a child. We love her determination to become a part of the human world, even though it’s a mess. We can’t understand why King Triton won’t let Ariel go and live her life, especially since he never gives her a real reason. “Because I said so” never sits well with a teenager, especially a teenage girl.

However, as we grow older, we definitely start to see where King Triton is coming from. Ariel is only 16 and, therefore, she is ABSOLUTELY a child. And he is just doing what he has to do to protect her, even if he doesn’t go about it in the best way.

Ariel goes above and beyond when she decides to go to the sea witch, Ursula, to try to get her help. Ariel knows that Ursula is an evil sea witch, and she knows that something bad might happen. But she does it anyway. She even signs a contract that will make her Ursula’s prisoner for eternity. And she does this all so she can go to the surface and try to make a man fall in love with her. A man she had never even spoken to, and a man who was only half-conscious when they first met.

Things worked out for Ariel, but that is really only because she is a Disney Princess. In the original story, Ariel fails at getting Prince Eric to fall in love with her and she is turned into sea foam. Hans Christian Anderson was most likely trying to show what happens when a child thinks they are a grown-up and doesn’t listen to their parents’ good advice.

Honorable Mention

Prince Charming

Okay, so he is not technically a Disney princess, but he is Disney royalty. And Prince Charming — from Disney’s 1950 animated film, Cinderella — is easily the most annoying character in the legendary princess film. He meets her, can’t take his eyes off of her, and dances with her all night. Then, forgets what she looks like. And he doesn’t even recognize Cinderella when he sees her at her house. He only realizes Cinderella when she reveals that she has the other glass slipper.

Cinderella has had a terrible life and lived with people who treated her as a maid, destroyed her mother’s dress, and tried to stop her from having any ounce of happiness. But Cinderella, come on girl, you deserve a man who actually remembers what you look like! We are so glad she got her happily ever after, but Prince Charming better remember her face from now on!

And there you have it, some of Disney’s most annoying and least annoying princesses (and one Prince). But just because they might be annoying, doesn’t mean we don’t love them!
