Depending on what time of year they visit and the length of their stay, what potential guests pack for their upcoming Disney trip is subject to change, but so are the environmental conditions of Orlando, Florida. Fortunately, even the greenest of Disney newbies don’t have to go in blind, as one travel expert proves.

In her new book, Walt Disney World Hacks: Second Edition, author Susan Veness shares over 350 tips, tricks, and guidelines for getting the most out of a trip to Disney World. Veness shares a wealth of Disney park knowledge and know-how, especially when packing things up for the next adventure. However, several entries even took this seasoned park-hopper by surprise.

Things like sunblock, solid walking shoes, and extra pairs of undergarments are semi-obvious necessities for a successful trip to Walt Disney World, but how many of us think to pack things like outfitted backpacks, Body Glide and friction sticks, and balloons to combat earaches? Probably not many.

Disney park regulars might know to pack a few extra odds and ends for their trip. The attitude of “never know what you might need” can often serve them well if things go pear-shaped, but Veness goes way beyond the extra mile in ensuring guests are prepared for whatever the parks can throw at them.

What the Experts Say

Inside the Magic recently had the opportunity to learn from the author, who shared what she believed was the absolute essentials few forget to pack. While her book contains several other suggestions, Vaness writes about what two items guests rarely pack and how they can be total game changers.

“One of the biggest errors when packing is overpacking, which is a problem with the current state of airline baggage fees. Walt Disney World Hacks points out which items to purchase once visitors arrive in Orlando, to save on luggage weight, but also highlights a few really useful and versatile items readers may not have thought of, such as Ziploc bags and a pashmina, that really come in handy without adding any real weight to their suitcase.”

“Among the most underrated but versatile items visitors can pack are various sizes of Ziploc bags. They weigh next to nothing and can be used in dozens of ways, from keeping your phone dry on wet rides to packing each day’s clothing for younger children in separate gallon-size Ziploc bags so they can get dressed by themselves when everyone is rushing around in the morning. Stick your resort room’s germy TV remote in a baggie, and it will still work. If your youngsters like the splash pads, pack a change of clothes in big Ziploc bags and then carry the wet clothes in the bag to keep everything else in your backpack dry. There are countless uses for these handy little items.”

Pashminas

“Pashminas, which are basically a giant scarf, are a great addition to your packing list. Fold them up to make a soft pillow in the car or on an airplane, use them to line a hot stroller or create shade inside a stroller for napping, or keep one in your backpack to fend off the brutal air conditioning in restaurants, busses, and attractions. There are dozens of ways to tie them so they become anything from a bathing suit coverup to an impromptu vest if your Mickey Bar chocolate drips onto your shirt.”

Walt Disney World Hacks: Second Edition goes on sale on April 2, 2024.

Inside the Magic would like to thank Mrs. Veness for sharing her work with us and helping readers plan better Disney World vacations.
