Disney World Confirms Animal Kingdom Departure as Guests Get Limited Time to Say Goodbye

Disney’s Animal Kingdom is preparing to say goodbye to an animal that many guests have watched grow up over the last two years.

Bakso, the Sumatran tiger born at Walt Disney World in September 2024, will leave Animal Kingdom later this fall. The move means visitors only have a limited amount of time remaining to see him at Maharajah Jungle Trek before he begins the next chapter of his life.

Disney has not announced Bakso’s exact departure date or revealed which zoo will become his new home. However, his destination will be another facility accredited by the Association of Zoos & Aquariums.

While Bakso leaving Disney World may disappoint guests who have followed him since he was a cub, there is an important reason behind the move.

Bakso Is Growing Up

Bakso recently celebrated his second birthday, and he has changed quite a bit since guests first met him.

The tiger was born in September 2024 to Sohni and Conrad. His birth was particularly significant because he became the first Sumatran tiger cub born at Walt Disney World in seven years.

Guests had to wait a few months before seeing him in person.

Bakso finally made his public debut in January 2025, and Disney quickly discovered just how interested guests were in meeting Animal Kingdom’s newest resident. His debut generated enough attention that the park created a separate queue for people hoping to get a look at the young tiger.

Since then, guests have been able to watch Bakso mature at Maharajah Jungle Trek.

Now that he is entering adulthood, however, it is time for him to move elsewhere.

Young tigers naturally become more independent as they mature and eventually establish their own territories. Bakso’s upcoming relocation represents another stage in that process.

His Move Has an Important Purpose

There is another major reason Bakso is leaving Disney’s Animal Kingdom.

His relocation comes through a recommendation from the Association of Zoos & Aquariums’ Species Survival Plan. These programs help accredited facilities coordinate the care and management of endangered species.

That could become especially important for Bakso in the future.

According to Disney, fewer than 600 Sumatran tigers remain in the wild. Bakso could eventually father cubs of his own, potentially allowing him to contribute to efforts surrounding the future of his critically endangered species.

That gives his departure a much different meaning.

Guests may be losing the chance to regularly see Bakso at Disney World, but his next destination could eventually give him an important role in the future of Sumatran tigers.

Guests Still Have Time to See Bakso

Disney has not provided a specific final date for Bakso at Animal Kingdom.

For the moment, he remains at Maharajah Jungle Trek, giving guests visiting this fall another opportunity to see him.

Bakso’s name was inspired by the Indonesian word for “meatball,” adding another memorable detail to the tiger guests have watched since early 2025.

Soon, though, his time at Walt Disney World will officially come to an end.

For guests who remember Bakso as a young cub, his departure may be a bittersweet moment. But after two years at the place where he was born, the popular tiger is growing up and preparing for a new home.
