Disney Replaces Belle’s Classic 1991 Look With Surprising Transformation
Belle’s yellow ball gown has been a Disney staple for decades, but the company is taking a different approach as one of its most beloved animated movies prepares to celebrate a major anniversary.
Fans who grew up watching Beauty and the Beast (1991) know exactly what Belle looks like. Her blue village dress and famous yellow gown have become part of the character’s identity, appearing on everything from costumes to collectible merchandise.
Now, Disney is replacing Belle’s iconic design for a special anniversary release. Instead of sticking with her familiar appearance, the company has chosen a look that longtime fans might recognize but rarely see celebrated.
Disney Unveils Belle’s New Anniversary Look
Disney is celebrating the 35th anniversary of Beauty and the Beast (1991) with a limited-edition Belle doll featuring a completely different take on the princess‘s wardrobe.
Rather than dressing Belle in her signature yellow gown, Disney has selected a green dress inspired by the animated movie’s memorable library scene.
Photos of the collectible recently surfaced on Instagram, revealing an elaborate design that goes well beyond the outfit Belle originally wore.
The doll features a dramatic green gown with a shape similar to the ballroom dress seen in Disney’s live-action Beauty and the Beast (2017).
Disney has also included several details inspired by the enchanted rose. Belle wears a gold rose choker, while embroidered roses decorate her dress. Her shoes feature rose-colored bows.
Even the packaging receives special attention. The presentation box includes decorative roses in its corners and a dark blue ribbon handle.
The doll is expected to arrive online at the Disney Store soon, although Disney hasn’t announced an exact release date.

Belle’s Famous Yellow Dress Gets Replaced
Disney’s decision to use a green gown might surprise fans who associate Belle with two particularly recognizable outfits.
In the opening scenes of Beauty and the Beast (1991), Belle wears a blue-and-white village dress with a white apron. It’s the outfit she wears while walking through town with a book, establishing her love of reading.
Later, Belle changes into the yellow ballroom gown that has become synonymous with the character.
That dress appears during her famous dance with the Beast, creating one of the movie’s most recognizable moments.
Disney has featured both outfits across merchandise, character artwork, costumes, and dolls for years.
However, neither outfit appears on this new anniversary collectible.
Instead, Disney has chosen a costume that receives considerably less attention. It’s a noticeable departure from Belle’s usual merchandise, especially for a release celebrating the movie that introduced her.
Importantly, Disney isn’t permanently removing Belle’s traditional outfits. The different appearance applies specifically to this limited-edition doll.

Why Belle’s Green Dress Matters
Although Belle’s yellow gown gets most of the attention, her green dress also appears at an important moment in Beauty and the Beast (1991).
In the animated movie, the Beast surprises Belle by showing her the enormous library inside his castle.
The gesture marks a meaningful moment in their relationship. Rather than focusing only on himself, the Beast begins recognizing what makes Belle happy.
For Belle, who loves books, the library becomes something special.
Disney’s new collectible draws inspiration from the green outfit associated with that memorable scene, but it doesn’t simply reproduce the animated design.
Instead, the company has created a more elaborate gown featuring decorative roses and a noticeably different silhouette.
Those floral details also connect the collectible to the enchanted rose, another important part of the movie’s story.
The result brings together several recognizable elements of the animated classic rather than focusing entirely on Belle’s famous ballroom appearance.

Disney Gives Collectors a Different Belle
Disney regularly releases special merchandise celebrating its princess characters, including limited-edition dolls with more elaborate costumes.
These collectibles offer fans alternatives to the familiar designs they see throughout the year.
Belle’s newest doll follows that tradition while drawing attention to an outfit that receives far less recognition than her yellow gown.
Some fans may prefer the classic look, particularly when celebrating the movie’s 35th anniversary. Others may welcome the opportunity to own something different.
Either way, Disney has made an unusual wardrobe choice for this anniversary release.
The green gown doesn’t permanently replace Belle’s traditional appearance, but it offers collectors a fresh interpretation of the character.
For now, fans will have to wait for the limited-edition doll to arrive at the Disney Store before adding this redesigned Belle to their collections.
