Disney Dress Code Debate Rages Over Controversial Shirt Choice

Over the past several years, a debate has ignited over what types of clothing should and should not be allowed in a Disney Park.

It all began when one post about a couple who wore shirts in the parks that many deemed inappropriate — the woman’s shirt read “I Wanted The D” and the man’s shirt read “I Gave Her The D” — went viral on social media.

While some considered it an adult joke that kids would not understand anyway, many called for Disney to step up and not allow those types of shirts in the parks.

Disney and its Cast Members seemingly became aware of how many guests were bothered by clothing like that, and they are now being a little bit more strict about their clothing requirements.

Another image was shared on Twitter with a woman claiming that she was kicked out of a Disney World Park after wearing a tank top that was very similar to the one that caused the online uproar. The woman claims that she has worn the top to Disney Parks without incident, but this past trip was different.

This is ridiculous. If your child understands the joke, then it’s your parenting that should be judged, not my shirt.

Other dress code hiccups have also been thrown into the debate of what is and is not appropriate to wear in the parks. From “ta-ta towels” to tight clothing and even guests believing Disney is body-shaming them – Cast Members’ job of ensuring they keep the parks family-friendly has been demanding, to say the least.

Fast forward to 2024. Disney fans have taken to Reddit’s social media platform to discuss, “What park shirts do you hate the most?”:

One commenter brings up the highly debated “She wants the D” shirts, which can still be seen sporadically in the parks.

“The I wanted the D/I gave her the D shirts make me want to barf.” Others agree that this is one shirt they prefer not to see in the parks.

Disney Dress Code

Disney has always reserved the right to deny guests entry into the parks — or ask them to leave — if they deem what they are wearing inappropriate. Disney’s dress code reads:

Disney reserves the right to deny admission to or remove any person wearing attire that is considered inappropriate or attire that could detract from the experience of other Guests. Attire that is not appropriate for the parks—and which may result in refusal of admittance—includes but is not limited to:

• Costumes and costume masks, which may not be worn by Guests 14 years of age or older.

Exceptions:

1. Specific Halloween and Christmas events. See below.
2. Some outfits inspired by Star Wars. Learn more

• Clothing with objectionable material, including obscene language or graphics
• Excessively torn clothing
• Clothing which, by nature, exposes excessive portions of the skin that may be viewed as inappropriate for a family environment
• Clothing that touches or drags on the ground
• Clothing with multiple layers is subject to search upon entry
• Objectionable tattoos

In the past, Disney has allowed some guests to receive a shirt from one of Disney’s many gift shops free of charge to wear around the parks instead of the inappropriate shirt. However, some social media posts encouraged visitors to wear unacceptable shirts on purpose to get free clothes, so Disney put a stop to the free clothing option.

Guests can either leave or buy a new shirt at the Disney gift shop.
