Disney's Hollywood Studios
Hollywood Studios Gets Sketchy (In the Best Way)
Big news for animation fans: Disney has officially announced a brand-new Magic of Animation Experience is coming to Hollywood Studios as part of the reimagined Animation Courtyard. And while we’re thrilled to see fresh energy coming to this long-overlooked corner of the park, we can’t help but take a moment to look back and remember all the things that made the original Magic of Disney Animation building such a special part of the park.
Because if Disney’s bringing the “Studios” back to Hollywood Studios, there’s no better place to start than honoring the magic that once lived here.
A Peek at What’s Next—and a Nod to What Came Before
The new Magic of Animation experience promises to celebrate the art of animation and let guests get hands-on with character sketching once again. While we’re totally here for the new offerings, we’re also hoping this reimagined space takes inspiration from the past. After all, the original Animation building was packed with unforgettable moments that entertained and truly inspired fans of all ages.
Here are a few of our favorite features we’d love to see return:

Sneak Peeks at Upcoming Movies
One of the coolest parts of the original experience was that guests got to see early concepts from upcoming Disney and Pixar films. It made the experience feel current and exclusive—like you were part of the creative process. Imagine walking into the new space and getting a first look at sketches and storyboards from whatever Disney has in the pipeline. It was a simple but powerful way to connect fans to the studio’s future.

The Animator’s Dream Desk
Remember the animator’s office display? That cozy, creative corner full of character plushies, toys, concept art, notes, and doodles scattered all over the desk? It was packed with personality and details that made it feel like a real working space. While it was just for display, it offered a glimpse into the world of Disney animators and gave aspiring creatives something to dream about. Bring that back, and you bring back the heartbeat of the building.

The Art of Disney Gallery—with Live Demonstrations
Yes, the Art of Disney Gallery still exists elsewhere—but this is where it belonged. Inside the original Animation Courtyard, guests could walk through a quiet, museum-like space full of gorgeous concept art, animation cels, and rare sketches. Even better? Live artist demos, where you could watch a Disney artist paint cels or draw characters by hand, right in front of you. Some of those works were even available to buy. It made the art feel personal, and the space feel alive.

“The Magic of Disney Animation” Featuring Mushu
Let’s be honest: this short show was the highlight of the whole experience. Mushu (voiced by Eddie Murphy) walked guests through how animation works—from storyboarding to final product—in a funny, snappy, and surprisingly informative presentation. And it was perfect. No need for a retheme. No replacement character. Just Mushu, maybe with a few new jokes, doing what he did best. It’s one of those rare attractions people genuinely miss exactly as it was.

Unique Character Meet-and-Greets with Immersive Sets
One of the hidden gems of Animation Courtyard used to be the incredible character meet-and-greet sets tucked inside. From Vanellope and Ralph in their Sugar Rush world to Sorcerer Mickey in his classic Fantasia setting, the meet-and-greet locations were themed, immersive, and one-of-a-kind. If Disney wants to bring back the magic—and draw major crowds—they could rotate in lesser-seen characters with limited-time sets. Imagine meeting characters from Treasure Planet, Atlantis, or The Emperor’s New Groove in beautifully themed environments. That kind of experience can’t be found anywhere else in the parks—and that’s exactly what would make it special.
A Comeback We’re Rooting For
There’s no doubt that the upcoming Magic of Animation experience will add much-needed energy and creativity back into Hollywood Studios. But for those of us who remember what this space once was, there’s hope that the reimagining will do more than just look ahead—it’ll also honor the rich history of animation at the park.
We’re excited. We’re optimistic. And we’re ready to see this area finally shine again—with a little old magic mixed into the new.
Here’s to a comeback that not only celebrates animation—but reminds people just how magical it’s always been.
