Top 5 Must-Do Experiences and 5 Skippable Ones at Disney’s Animal Kingdom

Continuing our series on must-do and skip-worthy attractions across Walt Disney World, we’re now exploring Disney’s Animal Kingdom. This immersive park offers a variety of experiences, from thrilling rides to tranquil explorations of nature. While no attraction here is inherently bad, some might not make your priority list if you’re on a tight schedule.

Let’s dive into the top five experiences you shouldn’t miss and five that might not make the cut on your next visit.

5 Must-Do Experiences in Disney’s Animal Kingdom

1. Kilimanjaro Safaris (Africa)

One experience we never miss at Disney’s Animal Kingdom is Kilimanjaro Safaris. This unique attraction takes Guests on a 110-acre journey through the Harambe Wildlife Reserve, home to over 34 species of animals.

Guests board open-air trucks and get up-close views of giraffes, elephants, lions, and more. Each safari ride is different, offering new animal sightings and interactions every time. The unpredictable nature of the wildlife makes this an unmissable adventure. Pro tip: Go early in the morning or late afternoon when the animals are most active.

2. Festival of the Lion King (Africa)

This Broadway-caliber show is a celebration of the beloved movie, The Lion King. Featuring incredible live singing, acrobatics, puppetry, and classic songs like “Hakuna Matata” and “Can You Feel the Love Tonight,” this 40-minute performance will leave you spellbound.

Performers in vibrant costumes stand on stage under colorful lights, evoking the dynamic spirit of the animal kingdom. The central figure, like a regal creature, wears a richly adorned outfit and strikes a dramatic pose as others surround them. The audience is visible in the dimly lit background.

The talent and artistry displayed here make it a must-see, especially if you’re a fan of Disney’s musicals. Be sure to check the showtimes and plan to arrive early for the best seats.

3. Avatar Flight of Passage (Pandora)

One of the most popular attractions in all of Walt Disney World, Avatar Flight of Passage lets Guests soar over the breathtaking landscapes of Pandora on the back of a banshee. This thrilling simulator ride combines cutting-edge technology with stunning visuals, creating an experience that’s both immersive and unforgettable.

Even if you’re not a fan of Avatar, this attraction’s artistry and innovation make it a must-do. Consider arriving early or using Lightning Lane to reduce wait times.

4. Expedition Everest – Legend of the Forbidden Mountain (Asia)

Expedition Everest offers one of the most exhilarating coaster experiences in Walt Disney World. The adventure begins with a trek through a detailed queue filled with artifacts from Himalayan expeditions. Once aboard, Guests ascend the mountain, only to encounter a broken track, forcing the coaster to plunge backward into darkness.

With its unexpected twists and turns and encounters with the fearsome Yeti, this high-speed ride is perfect for thrill-seekers.

5. Discovery Island Trails (Discovery Island)

For a quieter, more reflective experience, the Discovery Island Trails provide a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of the park. These pathways offer close-up views of the Tree of Life, adorned with intricate animal carvings.

The trails are a great spot for taking photos and appreciating the artistry of Disney’s Imagineers. It’s a simple yet magical way to connect with the park’s theme of celebrating nature.

5 Attractions to Skip in Disney’s Animal Kingdom

1. Na’vi River Journey (Pandora)

While visually stunning, Na’vi River Journey often has long wait times that may not justify the experience. This slow-moving boat ride takes Guests through the bioluminescent world of Pandora, featuring an animatronic Na’vi Shaman and breathtaking scenery.

A group of five people enjoys a dark, immersive ride that could be on any Ultimate Disney Ride List for Little Ones, with glowing plants and flowers surrounding them. The dimly lit setting features vibrant blues, pinks, and purples, creating a magical atmosphere.

However, the ride lacks a compelling storyline and thrill factor, making it a lower priority compared to other attractions in Pandora. Families with young children might still enjoy its relaxing pace and visuals.

2. TriceraTop Spin (DinoLand U.S.A.)

This spinner ride in DinoLand U.S.A. offers little in terms of unique experiences. Guests ride in dinosaur-themed vehicles that move up and down, similar to Dumbo the Flying Elephant in Magic Kingdom.

Unless you’re traveling with very young children, this ride doesn’t add much to your day and can easily be skipped for more exciting attractions.

3. Kali River Rapids (Asia)

Kali River Rapids, the park’s sole water ride, often leaves Guests drenched. While it can be refreshing on a hot day, the risk of walking around soaked for hours is a drawback for many.

The ride’s storyline about deforestation is compelling, but the experience itself is short and lacks significant thrills compared to other water rides in Walt Disney World. If you do choose to ride, consider bringing a poncho or a change of clothes.

4. It’s Tough to Be a Bug! (Discovery Island)

Located inside the Tree of Life, this 3D film and live show features characters from A Bug’s Life. While the educational aspect is commendable, the show includes dark and intense moments that might be frightening for younger Guests.

Between the unsettling bug-themed effects and the availability of more engaging attractions, this show is one we usually skip.

5. Rafiki’s Planet Watch (Conservation Station)

Rafiki’s Planet Watch offers a mix of activities, including a petting zoo, conservation exhibits, and educational demonstrations. While the area is enriching, the need to take a train to access it can make it feel time-consuming.

For those on a tight schedule, this area might not be worth the trip. However, animal enthusiasts and families looking for a calmer experience may still find it worthwhile.

Final Thoughts

Disney’s Animal Kingdom is a park filled with diverse attractions that cater to all ages and interests. While some experiences like Kilimanjaro Safaris and Avatar Flight of Passage are must-dos, others, such as TriceraTop Spin and Kali River Rapids, might not make the cut depending on your preferences. We hope this guide helps you prioritize your time and create unforgettable memories during your visit.
