Universal Saves ‘Jurassic Park’ Films After ‘Rebirth’ Backlash, Official Update Reveals

The Jurassic Park franchise has often relied on more than just its films to tell the full story.

Over the years, tie-in projects have expanded the universe in ways the movies never could. Netflix series such as Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous and Jurassic World: Chaos Theory explored the wider consequences of dinosaurs returning to the modern world, while video games, websites, and novels have frequently provided additional context for major events.

That approach may once again prove important following the divisive reception to Jurassic World Rebirth.

Jurassic World Rebirth Backlash Explained

Released in 2025, the seventh installment in the long-running series generated an impressive $869.1 million at the global box office. But despite its commercial success, the film sparked widespread debate among fans, many of whom were frustrated by its handling of storylines established in previous entries.

Rather than continuing the global dinosaur narrative introduced in Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (2018) and expanded in Jurassic World Dominion (2022), the film revealed that dinosaurs were no longer flourishing across the planet.

Instead, the surviving animals were confined to isolated regions near the equator, shifting the focus back toward a remote island adventure.

The story centered on Scarlett Johansson’s Zora Bennett and a mission to Île Saint-Hubert, a previously unknown InGen facility, where dangerous genetic experiments had been conducted.

Although the film introduced several intriguing concepts, many of them received little explanation. Questions quickly emerged surrounding the island’s history, the purpose of its research programs, the origins of its mutant dinosaurs, and the significance of the ancient ruins scattered throughout the jungle.

Now, Universal appears to be expanding that mythology through a newly announced video game expansion.

Frontier Developments recently revealed Jurassic World Evolution 3: Rebirth Expansion, a new DLC package that serves as a prequel to the events of the film. Watch the trailer below:

How the Rebirth Expansion Will Fix the Film

Rather than revisiting the aftermath seen in Rebirth, the expansion takes players back to Île Saint-Hubert before its collapse. The official description promises an opportunity to develop the facility during its operational years and uncover secrets that the movie only briefly touched upon.

The expansion’s official website also provides additional information about creatures including the Distortus rex and the Mutadons, offering a deeper look at the genetic experiments responsible for their creation.

The description also hints that players will investigate the island’s mysterious architecture.

“Inspired by Jurassic World Rebirth, push the boundaries of science and develop the top-secret facility on Île Saint-Hubert before its downfall in 2010,” the website states. It adds that players will be able to “uncover the mysteries of Mayan architecture on the island with towering temples and decorations.”

For fans who felt Rebirth introduced more questions than answers, that may be welcome news.

The franchise has repeatedly used expanded media to strengthen stories introduced on the big screen. Camp Cretaceousand Chaos Theory both added significant depth to the Jurassic World era, and the Rebirth Expansion looks set to do the same for the series’ latest chapter.

Whether it changes perceptions of the film remains to be seen, but it is already providing context many viewers felt was missing.

Jurassic World Evolution 3: Rebirth Expansion will be available for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S from June 16.
