Universal Orlando Warning: 4 Islands of Adventure Rides Shut Down, 1 Reopening Delayed
Four major closures are creating some scheduling headaches for Universal Orlando Resort visitors, and one popular attraction won’t reopen nearly as soon as originally planned.
Islands of Adventure is preparing for several changes over the coming months, including temporary ride refurbishments and permanent removals. Some closures will only last a day, while others will stretch into 2027.
For guests planning vacations around their favorite rides, these schedules could make a difference. And with one major reopening now delayed, the upcoming holiday season could look different from what some visitors expected.
Here’s everything guests need to know about the closures affecting Islands of Adventure.
Universal Continues Removing The Lost Continent
One of Islands of Adventure’s original themed lands is slowly becoming a thing of the past.
The Lost Continent opened alongside the park in 1999, introducing visitors to a world inspired by ancient mythology and mysterious ruins.
However, much of that original experience has already disappeared.
Poseidon’s Fury permanently closed in May 2023, ending its walkthrough adventure featuring ancient gods and special effects.
Other longtime locations, including The Mystic Fountain and Treasures of Poseidon merchandise shop, have also closed.
Universal is continuing the land’s phased permanent closure throughout 2026 and 2027 as it prepares for future experiences.
Unlike routine refurbishments, these removals mean guests shouldn’t expect the former attractions to return.
Universal hasn’t revealed complete replacement plans, leaving fans wondering what could eventually take the land’s place.
While The Lost Continent faces permanent changes, other Islands of Adventure attractions will only disappear temporarily.

Hogwarts Express Closing for One Day in November
Harry Potter fans visiting Universal Orlando in November should note an upcoming transportation disruption.
Hogwarts Express is scheduled to close on November 4, 2026, before reopening the following day, November 5.
The attraction connects the Wizarding World of Harry Potter locations at Islands of Adventure and Universal Studios Florida.
Guests can board at Hogsmeade Station in Islands of Adventure or King’s Cross Station in Universal Studios Florida, traveling between the two themed areas.
Along the way, passengers encounter familiar characters and themed scenes through the train’s windows. The experience changes depending on which way they’re traveling.
However, the closure means visitors won’t have access to that connection between Hogsmeade and Diagon Alley.
Instead, guests who want to explore both locations will need to walk between the parks via their regular entrances.
Universal hasn’t announced significant changes to Hogwarts Express, and the scheduled interruption currently lasts just one day.
Another popular attraction, however, will remain unavailable considerably longer.

Popeye & Bluto’s Bilge-Rat Barges Closing in January 2027
Guests hoping to get soaked at Toon Lagoon early next year may need to reconsider their plans.
Popeye & Bluto’s Bilge-Rat Barges is scheduled to close on January 4, 2027, with its refurbishment continuing through February 2.
The popular water attraction takes guests aboard circular rafts through rushing rapids, waterfalls, and other soaking surprises.
It’s one of Islands of Adventure’s wettest experiences, particularly appealing during Florida’s warmer months.
The January closure arrives during a traditionally cooler period in Central Florida, when some guests may be less interested in water rides.
Universal hasn’t announced any major storyline changes or significant upgrades associated with the refurbishment.
For now, the shutdown appears to be routine maintenance rather than a complete overhaul.
Unfortunately, another major water attraction is already experiencing a much longer closure than originally expected.

Jurassic Park River Adventure Reopening Delayed Until December
One of Islands of Adventure’s most recognizable attractions will remain closed longer than Universal initially planned.
Jurassic Park River Adventure shut down on January 5, 2026, for an extensive refurbishment.
Universal originally scheduled the attraction to reopen on November 20, just before Thanksgiving.
However, the resort has now pushed that date back nearly four weeks.
According to Universal’s updated operating calendar, Jurassic Park River Adventure is currently scheduled to reopen on December 16, 2026.
That means guests visiting during Thanksgiving and early December shouldn’t expect to experience the popular ride.
Jurassic Park River Adventure has operated since Islands of Adventure opened in 1999.
The attraction takes passengers through a dinosaur habitat before their peaceful journey turns chaotic, culminating in a dramatic plunge.
Universal hasn’t provided a complete breakdown of the refurbishment improvements, but the extended closure represents significant downtime for the longtime favorite.

What These Closures Mean for Universal Orlando Guests
The coming months will bring several changes to Islands of Adventure, and visitors should check attraction calendars before arriving.
While some experiences will return after temporary maintenance, The Lost Continent’s permanent removals will continue into 2027.
For now, December 16 remains the scheduled reopening date for Jurassic Park River Adventure, though guests should continue to monitor Universal’s official updates as their vacations approach.
