Pixar’s latest film, Elio, has proven to be divisive and controversial, though it’s failed to stir up any real excitement at the box office. Recently, several former Pixar staffers shared insight into the creation of Elio and what changed before it was released.

Leadership at Pixar reportedly insisted on altering Elio’s characterization to be more masculine, which led to the erasure of these key themes. Insiders report that scenes were deleted, including one featuring Elio wearing a pink tank top during a fashion show while cleaning the beach. This shift has raised questions about the authenticity of representation within the film, signaling a retreat from the inclusive narrative Pixar had initially intended.

Furthermore, the decision to streamline Elio’s character portrayal appears to align with a broader pattern of hesitance within the studio regarding LGBTQ+ representation. Such changes suggest that Pixar’s leadership may prioritize marketability and mainstream acceptance over the original, more diverse storylines they once championed.

The box office performance of Elio has not aligned with Pixar’s storied reputation. The film opened to a disappointing $20 million, with overall earnings barely surpassing $70 million since its premiere. Reports suggest that Elio may well be headed towards being Pixar’s lowest-grossing film to date, especially when weighed against its hefty budget, which some employees estimate to be over $200 million. This alarming financial outlook presents a stark contrast to past Pixar achievements, where films like Toy Story and Finding Nemo enjoyed overwhelming box office success.

Disappointment from the opening weekend can be partially attributed to the film’s focus on a bland narrative—devoid of its original thematic richness—leaving audiences less engaged than anticipated. This has led to speculation about whether Elio will fare better on Disney+, especially as other recent releases found renewed life on the streaming service.

Internal Struggles at Pixar

Internal responses to the changes made to Elio have revealed deep employee concerns regarding the studio’s trajectory. The backlash from Pixar employees has been loud and clear, with many expressing disappointment in how leadership has handled themes of inclusivity. Historically, Pixar has faced similar criticisms over censorship concerns, such as the controversial decision to cut a same-sex kiss from Lightyear, and more recently, removing a transgender character from the animated series Win or Lose. This inconsistency in handling LGBTQ+ representations across various projects raises questions about the studio’s commitment to progressive storytelling.

The legacy of such censorship reflects ongoing struggles within Pixar—a company that prides itself on creativity and innovation yet finds itself hindered by leadership’s cautious approach to sensitive themes. Employees have emphasized that the original version of Elio had the potential to resonate deeply with audiences, and the final product feels stripped of its core message, leading to a sense of disillusionment within the creative team.

Future of Elio and Pixar’s Identity

Looking ahead, there’s speculation about the potential recovery of Elio following its anticipated release on Disney+. While some previous Pixar films have enjoyed a second chance in the streaming arena, the overall outlook for Elio remains uncertain given its tepid reception.

The critical response to Elio reinforces the audience’s desire for genuine representation in animated films. As discussions grow around what is acceptable for children’s media, consumers are increasingly vocal about their preferences for more heartfelt and relatable storytelling. Whether Pixar listens to these sentiments or remains subject to leadership caution will significantly impact its future projects and legacy.

Ultimately, the journey of Elio and the surrounding community’s response illustrate the complexities faced by beloved animation studios like Pixar. As the landscape of cinema evolves, Pixar must consider the balance between commercial success and fostering a culture of inclusivity and authentic representation.

  1. Makes sense LGBQ is only 8.5% if world population and most heterosexual parents won’t take their children to this sort of film. There are specific TV channels and websites devoted to this so there are targeted avenues to view these films.

  2. Pixar/Disney need to go Back and make Better Trailers. This alone will make a huge Difference. I remember thetrailer for Cars,it made you wanna go to the movies, Brave had one of the best trailers ihave even seen, and know it I see a lazy effort to get fans attention. Also, promoting a movie 3 or more years out is NOT always good.I remember seeing the trailer for Elon over 2 years ago and it was Good, but the latest ones were not very informative or too simple.
Maybe putting too much on the internet isn’t a good thing too.

  3. It was teaching kids to summon demons.
It is well known with a bit of research that #disney is widely used as mind control programming (for mk ultra and everyday children). Listen to my many interviews @eyesontherightpodcast.

Very clever implanting sigil magick in the new #Elio movie where he lays in the center of the sigil. To call in the demons AKA aliens to “abduct him”. He finds acceptance amongst the aliens. Subtle priming and programming.

Sigil magic uses a symbol to harness energy much like the magic circle in witchcraft or a pentagram. This is well known with a little bit of research. So imagine how innocent this looks, but on a deeper level it’s actually introducing a child to calling in “aliens.” Clever, right?

The man in the video is Scottish comic writer Grant Morrison who widely is known to use sigil magic and has actually called in an “alien” .

Aleister Crowley is who they base much of their magic on, so perhaps consider thinking twice before opening your child up to this and reaping spiritual ramifications.

I do not recommend doing this , merely warning people who may be unaware.
