More Operational Changes Take Place as Disney Prepares for Epic Universe’s Arrival

Summer at Walt Disney World Resort is shaping up to be an exciting season, with Disney unveiling updates that will provide guests with even more ways to cool off—and perhaps draw attention amid Orlando’s expanding theme park landscape.

In a major move, Disney has confirmed that both of its water parks—Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon and Disney’s Blizzard Beach—will be open at the same time for the first time since 2019. Starting May 21, visitors will be able to enjoy Typhoon Lagoon alongside Blizzard Beach, bringing additional options for water-loving guests.
Before this dual reopening, Blizzard Beach will temporarily close on May 1 for routine maintenance, making way for Typhoon Lagoon’s long-anticipated return. Since the pandemic, the water parks have alternated availability, but this summer will mark a shift toward full operations. Guests won’t have to wait long before Blizzard Beach reopens, ensuring both parks are available throughout the summer season.

“For the first time since 2019, Disney World will have all 6 of our parks—all 4 theme parks and 2 water parks—open at the same time,” Disney Parks Blog revealed in an April update. This period, running from May 21 through September 7 gives guests more choices than ever when planning their Disney visit.
May 21 is also a key date for theme park fans, as it comes just a day before Universal Orlando Resort debuts its highly anticipated new park, Universal Epic Universe. With attendance expected to soar, Disney’s decision to offer both water parks at once could help distribute crowds while encouraging travelers to extend their stay at Walt Disney World.
Adding to the excitement, a fan-favorite after-hours event is making a return to Typhoon Lagoon. “Let’s glow! Disney H2O Glow After Hours is returning with fun for the whole family on select nights this summer,” Disney Water Parks’ official Instagram account confirmed.

Running from May 23 through September 13, this separately ticketed event gives guests three hours of exclusive nighttime access, complimentary treats including ice cream novelties, popcorn, and select beverages, as well as reduced wait times at attractions like the Typhoon Lagoon Surf Pool and Castaway Creek. Guests can also enjoy a lively DJ dance party and rare character appearances throughout the evening.
To further accommodate summer crowds, Disney has announced extended operating hours for its water parks. Beginning June 1, Blizzard Beach and Typhoon Lagoon will remain open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., an extra hour compared to their spring schedule. Additionally, Disney resort hotel guests will continue to receive complimentary water park admission on their check-in day, making it even easier to enjoy these refreshing escapes.

Meanwhile, Blizzard Beach has been celebrating a major milestone. On April 1, the water park launched its 30th-anniversary festivities with special entertainment and interactive experiences. “Just imagine a high-energy DJ spinning some toe-tapping tunes on the deck near the Polar Pub,” Disney Parks Blog shared. “And fun interactions with Mickey and Minnie decked out in their winter attire. There’s even going to be snowman bowling and character-themed tubes for floating down Cross Country Creek.”
This celebration will be brief, as Blizzard Beach is set to close at the end of April, but the excitement continues with both water parks opening together for the first time in years. However, this expanded availability does present some logistical challenges.

Florida’s unpredictable weather has often led to sudden water park closures, particularly in the cooler months. Earlier this year, Blizzard Beach faced multiple shutdowns due to cold fronts sweeping through the region. Now, with both parks operating at once, guests may need to be flexible with their plans should weather-related closures occur. If conditions force either water park to close, visitors may shift their plans to Disney’s four main theme parks, impacting crowd flow across the resort.
According to Click Orlando, another cold front is already forming just as summer approaches, serving as a reminder for guests to be prepared when planning their Disney visit. With hurricane season also on the horizon, those heading to the parks should consider alternate activities to ensure a magical experience no matter the weather.
