Netflix Rewrites ‘Wednesday’ Season 3 as Jenna Ortega Shuts Down Key Storyline

Netflix still isn’t telling fans much about what Wednesday Addams will face when Wednesday returns for Season 3.

That’s hardly surprising. Major story details remain under wraps, and there’s still no official premiere date. But fans don’t necessarily need a complete plot synopsis to see how much the series has evolved since its first season.

One storyline that once looked capable of becoming increasingly important has already moved much further into the background.

Season 2 didn’t completely shut the door. There were enough moments to keep questions alive about where things could eventually go. However, Jenna Ortega has spent years making it clear that she doesn’t necessarily want Wednesday heading in that direction.

As production moves forward, those comments have become even more interesting.

Cameras Are Already Rolling on Season 3

Production for Season 3 of Wednesday officially began near Dublin in February 2026.

Ortega returns on Wednesday alongside familiar cast members, including Catherine Zeta-Jones and Luis Guzmán. Netflix is also bringing several newcomers into the series, including Winona Ryder, Eva Green, Chris Sarandon, Noah Taylor, Oscar Morgan, and Kennedy Moyer.

Fans shouldn’t start circling a premiere date just yet.

Netflix hasn’t officially announced when Season 3 will arrive. External sources have pointed toward a potential late 2027 release, but Netflix hasn’t confirmed that timeline.

The story remains similarly mysterious. Still, looking backward provides some important context for where Wednesday’s character could be heading next.

Season 1 Put Wednesday in an Unexpected Position

Wednesday arrived at Nevermore Academy with mysteries to solve and very little interest in behaving like everyone else.

Then came Tyler Galpin and Xavier Thorpe.

Both characters showed interest in Wednesday, creating a love triangle around someone who hardly seemed interested in becoming the center of one. Tyler initially appeared to offer Wednesday a relatively normal connection. Xavier repeatedly tried getting closer to her while also becoming a suspect in her investigation.

Then Wednesday learned the truth about Tyler.

He was the Hyde behind a series of brutal attacks, dramatically complicating whatever feelings or connection had developed between them.

The other side of the triangle eventually disappeared as well.

Percy Hynes White didn’t return as Xavier for Season 2. Allegations of sexual misconduct surfaced online against Hynes White in 2023, which the actor publicly denied. Netflix did not publicly say those allegations caused his departure. The series instead explained Xavier’s absence by revealing that he transferred to Reichenbach Academy in Switzerland.

That left Tyler as the remaining piece of Wednesday’s earlier romantic story.

Season 2 Left Just Enough Behind

The series could have completely abandoned Wednesday and Tyler’s connection after everything that happened.

It didn’t.

Season 2 avoided restoring their previous relationship, but their interactions still carried tension. Showrunner Alfred Gough has described something “unspoken” between Wednesday and Tyler and said sparks continue to fly when they appear together.

That creates several possibilities without guaranteeing any of them.

Tyler could eventually gain greater control over his Hyde abilities. Wednesday could also find herself confronting whether she could ever forgive someone who deceived her and caused so much destruction.

Those ideas could provide plenty of material for another season.

But there’s another major factor working against a return to the romantic direction established in Season 1.

Ortega Has Made Her Position Pretty Clear

Jenna Ortega hasn’t been shy about criticizing Wednesday’s original love triangle.

After Season 1, Ortega said the storyline “made no sense” for her character. She also discussed pushing back against creative decisions she didn’t believe felt authentic to Wednesday.

Season 2 reflected a noticeably different approach.

Instead of giving Wednesday another conventional love interest, the series leaned further into its darker material. Ortega welcomed that decision.

She also had greater creative involvement by that point. Ortega became an executive producer beginning with Season 2, expanding her behind-the-scenes role.

That doesn’t mean every complicated interaction between Wednesday and Tyler has to disappear. Gough’s comments suggest the writers still see something interesting in their dynamic.

A traditional relationship is another matter entirely.

Wednesday Doesn’t Need To Follow the Original Plan

Season 1 experimented with many different elements while establishing Wednesday’s world.

Romance was one of them.

Since then, the series has shown that Wednesday’s relationships can remain complicated without necessarily turning into conventional love stories. Her friendships, family conflicts, supernatural problems, and personal development provide plenty for Season 3 to explore.

Tyler can still remain part of that equation. Their history alone gives the writers plenty to work with whenever their paths cross again.

What looks far less certain is whether those encounters will ever lead where Season 1 once suggested they might.

Ortega has spent years questioning whether romance truly fits Wednesday Addams. Heading into Season 3, the series appears much more willing to find out how far Wednesday can go without it.
