Marvel Rewrites Bruce Banner Storyline, Teases Major Hulk Shakeup for ‘Spider-Man’ Sequel

Marvel’s next Spider-Man movie may be hiding a much bigger surprise than fans originally expected.

While most attention surrounding Spider-Man: Brand New Day (2026) has focused on villains, new suits, and possible storylines, Hulk has quietly become one of the film’s biggest talking points online. And, according to recent rumors, Marvel Studios may be preparing to overhaul the character once again.

For years, the MCU portrayed Bruce Banner as the more relaxed, intelligent Smart Hulk. That version helped Marvel push the character into a more comedic role after Avengers: Endgame (2019), but not every fan loved the shift away from Hulk’s destructive roots.

Now, however, signs point to Marvel undoing that entire era.

Hulk Changed Dramatically Over the Years

Bruce Banner’s MCU story has evolved more than almost any other Avenger. The franchise first introduced the character in The Incredible Hulk (2008), where Edward Norton played Banner as a scientist struggling to contain a terrifying monster.

That Hulk felt unstable and dangerous. Every transformation created chaos, and Banner constantly feared what Hulk might do next.

Marvel later recast the role with Mark Ruffalo starting in The Avengers (2012). Ruffalo quickly became one of the MCU’s most recognizable stars, appearing in films like Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015), Thor: Ragnarok (2017), Avengers: Infinity War (2018), and Avengers: Endgame (2019).

Over time, Marvel slowly moved away from the savage version of Hulk. Instead, the studio introduced Smart Hulk, combining Banner’s brain with Hulk’s strength. The change worked for some fans, but others felt Marvel removed the character’s most exciting parts.

Marvel Left Hulk in an Interesting Place

The last time audiences saw Hulk was in She-Hulk: Attorney at Law (2022). Throughout the Disney+ series, Bruce Banner acted as Jennifer Walters’ mentor while staying fully in his Smart Hulk form.

Unlike earlier MCU appearances, Banner finally seemed comfortable with his powers. Hulk no longer looked like an uncontrollable monster destroying everything around him.

Still, Marvel hinted that more changes could be on the way.

Near the end of the series, Bruce traveled to Sakaar before returning with his son, Skaar, during the finale. Many viewers believed Marvel was planting seeds for future Hulk stories somewhere later in the MCU timeline.

Instead, rumors now suggest Marvel may revisit Hulk much sooner than expected.

Why “Savage Smash Hulk” Has Fans Talking

Marvel is reportedly bringing Hulk back in Spider-Man: Brand New Day (2026), releasing July 31, 2026.

Speculation intensified after promotional artwork for the movie reportedly appeared online before quickly disappearing. The leaked images allegedly showed Spider-Man alongside villains like Scorpion, Tarantula, and Boomerang.

But the biggest surprise came from new Hasbro merchandise.

The toy packaging reportedly calls Ruffalo’s character “Savage Smash Hulk,” immediately leading fans to believe Marvel is restoring Hulk’s more violent comic-book personality.

That title alone feels important. Marvel spent years pushing Hulk toward a calmer direction after Endgame. Suddenly using language centered around rage and destruction feels like a deliberate pivot.

The figure reportedly resembles classic Hulk designs fans know well, complete with ripped purple pants, huge muscles, and an aggressive expression. Reports also suggest the figure looks far more intimidating than Smart Hulk ever did.

What Could Happen in the Movie?

One fan theory claims the film’s villains may accidentally trigger Hulk’s transformation.

According to online rumors, Tombstone and Scorpion could target Bruce Banner with a toxin meant to stop him from helping Peter Parker with his own mutation problems. Instead of suppressing Hulk, however, the attack may unleash Banner’s savage side once again.

That would create a nightmare scenario for Spider-Man.

Peter Parker already appears set to battle multiple villains in the movie, and adding an uncontrollable Hulk into the middle of New York City could completely change the scale of the story.

Marvel has not officially confirmed these rumors. Still, between the leaked artwork, merchandise branding, and growing speculation online, fans increasingly believe the Smart Hulk era may finally be ending.
