Whenever you visit a Disney theme park, there is a high chance that you will have to wait in line. There is really no “slow season” anymore, so the days of visiting the Parks with almost no long lines are a thing of the past. And, let’s be honest. No one likes waiting in line, especially when the lines are long.
The longer you wait in line, the less time you have to enjoy all the rides and attractions you want. Some Guests have decided that they just don’t want to wait in those long lines, so they will come up with ways to avoid them. The most popular method of avoiding long waits is line-holding.
Now, with line-holding, one person always has to wait in the entire line. They wait, and then the rest of their party will come and join them when they get closer to the front.
Should Cast Members Stop Line-Holding?
This practice is highly frowned upon, as other guests get very frustrated. Some guests may even prevent the party from cutting everyone else who has been waiting.
Disney Cast Members do their best to not allow line-holding, but it doesn’t always work. And, sometimes, it’s more of a hassle and a fight for Cast Members to stop entitled Guests.
Redditor u/FractiousPhoebe said when they visited Walt Disney World Resort, they noticed a lot of line cutting. The worst part was the line-holders weren’t teenagers, being a pain to the people around them. They were adults who were aware that what they were doing wasn’t right.
I’m part way through day 2 at the parks and so annoyed at the line holding. Get in line behind 2 people then all of a sudden the rest of their large group shows up. Meanwhile my 6 year old is watching this happen over and over again. I got fed up today and said Really this is happening and they were said it was their group. These were adults. Don’t get in line until everyone is there. The kids are watching this happen then they get called entitled for being frustrated.
Cast Member Shares Their Experience
Reddit user hunnycakes responded that they were a Cast Member who used to work in Disney California Adventure Park. While they were not able to stop the annoying father, three Cast Members at another ride did.
When I worked at California Adventure I had a dad get to the front of my line, then step to the side and waited for his family of 5 more (that just walked through everyone because they were “catching up “ to him). Of course they asked for 2 separate vehicles on my low capacity attraction when 1 would fit them all comfortably, and then the dad DIDN’T EVEN RIDE. He exited and I watched him walk to the next attraction and get in line, so his family could catch up to him there after. I called the next attraction and told them what the dad was doing and they were able to stop him and talk to him. He thought there was absolutely nothing wrong with what he was doing…
It was hard for me to say anything to him because the attraction was so small, that I worked it by myself. The next one over had 3 CMs working it, including a greeter, so it was easier for them to address. Plus, it happened to be all males at that attraction at the time and I thought the dad might have an easier time accepting a talking to from a man rather than me.
Against Disney’s Code of Conduct
If you are planning on visiting a Disney Park, please be aware that line-holding and line-cutting are against Disney’s code of conduct for Guests.
It doesn’t matter if you are visiting the Magic Kingdom, Animal Kingdom, EPCOT, Disney’s Hollywood Studios, Disneyland Park, or one of the global Disney Parks. Disney asks that each Guest be respectful of the other Guests who are enjoying their day. Should Guest behavior become problematic, Disney reserves the right to remove the problematic Guest from the Park.

It is against the rules. Everyone is supposed to follow the rules. If the cast member can’t handle the problem, then call security. The sight of a Disney Security officer in uniform might change their entitledness but if not, the officer can either escort them to the back of the line, or out the front gate. Disney doesn’t need that kind of entitlement. I get my Genie+ just like everyone else if I want a shorter wait. I’m also retired so when I go I plan to go during a not as busy time like in the middle of the week and avoid Summer and the holidays.
If someone has to leave a line for a “nature break”, when they get to the starting spot maybe a pass of some sort given to them would be a good thing to prevent some people from abusing the process. However, someone getting in line to save others their wait time is totally wrong, unfair and abusive of most peoples’ good and kind nature.
I don’t see line holding as an issue. I’m an AP, Florida resident, going since it opened in 1971. I’m used to waiting in lines. I don’t like it, but unfortunately that’s how it is especially at peak times. I’m lucky enough to be able to avoid peak times. But I went with my adult son during his Christmas break. The lines were awful. We paid for Genie but Genis does not guarantee a spot in line. If the return times are all taken you’re in the 2 hour standby line. So I absolutely don’t mind dad sacrificing his time for his family, heck, why didn’t he enjoy the ride too? Anyway, while waiting in Pirates for 2 hours last Christmas I couldn’t keep track of how many people passed us. When I had to go to the restroom I didn’t think anything about it, going and coming back. Everyone was very agreeable. The kids didn’t even notice because their faces were in their tablets.
I would never have known saving a spot in line while my family (up to 6 of us if I’m lucky) sits in comfort gets a drink or shops if it wasn’t for this article. I still don’t understand that this is taboo.
I wish Disney would keep the reservation system and not allow capacity or anywhere near it. That would help. Nothing will eliminate wait times
