‘Jurassic Park’ Ride No Longer Returning in November at Universal Orlando

When a ride has been closed for most of a year, every reopening date feels like a finish line. Universal Orlando has now moved that line. Jurassic Park River Adventure at Islands of Adventure was scheduled to reopen on November 20, and the date has changed to December 17, 2026.

Here’s what has been reported, what hasn’t, and how to sort out the dates if an Orlando trip is on your radar. We’re sticking to confirmed details and labeling anything that’s reported secondhand.

A word on wording first. A listed reopening date is a schedule, and this one has already changed once. That’s the main reason we’re careful with phrases like “will reopen.” The most accurate way to put it is that Universal’s website currently lists December 17, 2026.

One Ride, Two Dates

The ride’s first announced reopening date was November 20, described as just in time for the start of the holiday guest rush. The new date is December 17, which is 27 days later and eight days before Christmas.

Universal Orlando’s website recently updated the page for the ride. The page now states:

Jurassic Park River Adventure is temporarily closed due to scheduled maintenance and will now reopen on December 17, 2026.

The page doesn’t give a reason for the longer closure, and no reason was provided elsewhere in the information we have. We won’t suggest one.

The Closure So Far

The ride closed on January 5, 2026, for a refurbishment described as nearly year-long. Water rides closing for the winter is normal, but the reporting characterizes this closure as extended downtime.

Jurassic Park River Adventure opened in 1999. It reportedly had several broken effects and aging infrastructure that warranted the longer closure. Because those details are described as reported, they shouldn’t be treated as an official Universal statement. Universal’s own page, as quoted above, says only that the ride is closed for scheduled maintenance and lists the new date. Anything beyond that is secondhand, and we’ve labeled it that way throughout.

Clues From Above

Aerial photos have shown some of the extensive work taking place. Specifically, the photos reveal a track replacement and new roofing. We’re limiting our description to those two items because they’re what has been shown. Aerial photos can capture only part of a project, so they don’t tell us how much work remains or how the schedule is going.

What We Can’t Tell You

A few questions remain open. The reporting doesn’t explain why the date moved. It doesn’t say whether the work is behind schedule or whether anything was added to the project. And it doesn’t say whether the date could move again.

The only confirmed change is the date itself, from November 20 to December 17, 2026, as shown on Universal’s website.

A Neighborhood of Dinosaurs

The ride sits within the Jurassic Park area of Islands of Adventure. That area also contains Jurassic World VelociCoaster, Pteranodon Flyers, the Camp Jurassic playground, Jurassic Park Discovery Center, and Raptor Encounter. Those are the other attractions in the area as listed.

A Family Tree Spanning Three Parks

This is the second version of the ride. It opened three years after the original 1996 ride at Universal Studios Hollywood. According to the report, the Hollywood version was revamped in 2018 and became Jurassic World: The Ride. A third version opened at Universal Studios Japan in 2001.

Lining Up Your Trip With the New Date

If your Orlando visit comes before December 17, the ride is listed as closed. If you arrive on or after December 17, it’s listed as scheduled to reopen, but keep in mind the date has already changed once.

That doesn’t mean it will change again. Nothing in the information we have suggests that. It does mean that checking the ride’s page on Universal’s website closer to your trip is a sensible habit.

For travelers with plans that include both Universal and Walt Disney World, treat the ride as a bonus and not a must. Build an itinerary that works whether or not it’s open, and you won’t be caught off guard if anything shifts. If you’re visiting before December 17, the other attractions in the Jurassic Park area listed above are there to fill that time.

Avoid the Old Date

One easy mistake is relying on the first announcement. The November 20 date has been replaced on Universal’s page, so if you see it mentioned elsewhere, it’s out of date. The date to use is December 17, 2026.
