Henry Cavill’s Wolverine Confirmed as MCU Closes in on Reset
Nearly two years after Deadpool & Wolverine (2024) stormed theaters and crossed the billion-dollar mark worldwide, one of the film’s most unexpected moments is still generating discussion among Marvel fans.
While Shawn Levy’s Marvel blockbuster delivered its share of Multiverse chaos, surprise appearances, and fan-service moments, few generated as much attention as Henry Cavill‘s brief appearance as an alternate version of Wolverine. Known affectionately by fans as “The Cavillrine,” the cameo quickly became one of the movie’s most memorable gags, despite lasting only a matter of minutes.
The joke originated during Wade Wilson’s increasingly desperate search for a replacement Wolverine. As Ryan Reynolds’ Merc with a Mouth jumped across realities, he encountered Cavill’s version of the iconic mutant. Sporting a white tank top, ripped jeans, and Wolverine’s signature claws, Cavill’s take on the character was immediately christened “The Cavillrine” by Deadpool himself.
What initially seemed like a one-off joke has now gained official recognition within Marvel’s ever-expanding Multiverse. Fans who remained seated through the film’s credits may have already noticed an early clue. Cavill was credited as “The Cavillrine” rather than simply Wolverine.

Additional details have since emerged regarding how Marvel handled the surprise behind the scenes. According to reports from The Direct, the screenplay reportedly used the codename “Hopperine” during production in an effort to keep Cavill’s involvement secret. Such measures have become standard practice for Marvel projects, particularly when surprise appearances are involved.
The cameo itself was never designed to carry larger narrative weight. Cavill’s appearance functioned primarily as a fun Multiversal detour, offering audiences a glimpse of an alternate reality before quickly moving on. It fit comfortably within Marvel’s established use of the Multiverse as a platform for unexpected character appearances and alternate versions of familiar heroes.
Now, a newly unveiled Marvel Legends action figure from Hasbro has effectively removed any remaining ambiguity surrounding the character’s status. The figure recreates Cavill’s appearance from the film, complete with claws, tank top, and denim attire, and prominently identifies the character as “The Cavillrine.”

According to The Direct, the official packaging and promotional materials use the name throughout, formally establishing the character within MCU canon. That development has naturally sparked fresh speculation about Cavill’s future with Marvel. However, the existence of an officially branded action figure should not be mistaken for evidence of larger casting plans.
Merchandise often celebrates memorable moments and characters without signaling future storylines. The Cavillrine’s canon status confirms that the variant exists within Marvel’s Multiverse, but it does not indicate that Cavill is preparing to take over the Wolverine mantle on a permanent basis.
Marvel fans have seen a similar situation before. John Krasinski’s appearance as Reed Richards in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022) was widely viewed as a dream casting choice among audiences. Despite the overwhelmingly positive reaction, Marvel later selected Pedro Pascal to portray the franchise’s primary Reed Richards beginning with The Fantastic Four: First Steps (2025) and future Avengers installments.
The comparison highlights an important distinction between fan-favorite cameos and long-term franchise planning.

At present, Hugh Jackman remains firmly associated with Wolverine in Marvel’s ongoing narrative ambitions. After returning to the role in Deadpool & Wolverine, the actor is reportedly expected to remain involved in the Multiverse Saga, with rumors linking him to both Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars—the duo of movies expected to reset the MCU.
Reports have even suggested that one sequence may feature Wolverine facing off against Spider-Man, underscoring Marvel’s continued focus on Jackman’s version of the character. If those reports prove accurate, they offer a strong indication of where Marvel sees Wolverine fitting into its future.
That doesn’t make The Cavillrine any less significant for fans who enjoyed the cameo. For many viewers, the official Marvel Legends figure serves as confirmation that the character’s brief appearance was more than a throwaway gag. The variant has a name, a place in Marvel canon, and now a collectible representation to match.

In practical terms, the situation is straightforward. Henry Cavill’s Wolverine variant officially exists within the MCU’s Multiverse. Marvel has embraced the nickname, preserved it through merchandise, and given fans a tangible reminder of one of Deadpool & Wolverine‘s most talked-about surprises.
The MCU remains full of alternate realities and countless versions of familiar heroes. For now, The Cavillrine occupies a memorable corner of that landscape, while Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine continues to stand at the center of Marvel’s larger plans.
As for Deadpool himself, Ryan Reynolds has not yet been confirmed for another MCU project. Still, many observers expect the character to surface during the upcoming Avengers films. Reynolds has also discussed his own ideas for Deadpool’s future, though those plans may differ from what some fans have been anticipating.
