The Power Rangers franchise, a beloved staple of childhood for many fans, is about to make its return to screens in a brand-new way. Known for its mix of action, adventure, and teenage superheroes, the franchise has enjoyed a rich history since its debut in 1993.

And now, a new chapter is set to unfold, with Disney now taking the reins.

According toan exclusive report from TheWrap, Disney is teaming up with Hasbro, the toy giant behind the Power Rangers, to bring a new live-action series to Disney+.

The project is in the hands of Jonathan E. Steinberg and Dan Shotz, the showrunners of the hit Percy Jackson and the Olympians series.

“Percy Jackson and the Olympians” showrunners Jonathan E. Steinberg and Dan Shotz are in talks to write, showrun and produce a live-action “Power Rangers” series for Disney+ and 20th Century TV, TheWrap has exclusively learned.

Hasbro will produce the series, which will reinvent the franchise for a whole new generation of fans while delighting those who already know and love the world of Power Rangers.

Steinberg and Shotz are no strangers to bringing fan-favorite stories to life, and their involvement signals that Disney has big plans for this revival.

The decision to revitalize the Power Rangers brand comes after years of uncertainty. While the franchise has remained popular over the decades, it has struggled to find a consistent home. The original Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers series was a massive hit in the ’90s, especially with millennials, who fondly remember the adventures of the original team of colorful superheroes.

However, after three seasons, the franchise began to change its names and evolve with different teams, with the most recent iteration, Power Rangers Cosmic Fury, airing in 2023.

Despite the franchise’s ups and downs on television, Power Rangers has also found success on the big screen. The first Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers movie debuted in 1995, followed by Turbo: A Power Rangers Movie two years later. Both were produced by 20th Century Fox, but it wasn’t until 2017 that Lionsgate rebooted the franchise in an attempt to reach a new generation.

Unfortunately, the gritty, more mature take failed to live up to expectations, grossing just $182 million on a $100 million budget, dashing hopes for a follow-up.

The Power Rangers franchise also found a new audience in 2023 when Netflix released Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers: Once & Always. The special became an instant hit with fans, both old and new, adding another layer to the franchise’s long and storied history.

But despite these success stories, the Power Rangers still lacked a permanent home, bouncing from Fox Kids to ABC Kids and, more recently, to Netflix.

Now, Disney is stepping in, promising a fresh direction for the iconic team of heroes. Details about the series are sparse, but it’s clear that Disney plans to reinvent the Power Rangers for a new generation of fans, while keeping in mind the nostalgia factor that has made the franchise so enduring.

As Steinberg and Shotz take charge, fans are eager to see how the series will blend classic elements with new storytelling approaches.
