Disney Park Hit With Violent Incident as Smoking Issue Continues to Stir Debate
Disney parks may be known for their immersive experiences, but they’ve also become hotspots for guest disputes.
From arguments over parade spots to altercations in ride queues, tensions occasionally spill over, with smoking triggering some of the tensest disputes.
A fight broke out at Shanghai Disneyland after a guest ignored the park’s smoking policy, triggering a heated confrontation. The altercation, which quickly turned physical, was captured on camera. But this isn’t just an isolated incident—it highlights an ongoing problem that Disney has struggled to contain at various parks.

Fight Breaks Out at Shanghai Disneyland
According to reports from Wenxue City, the fight erupted in the early morning at Shanghai Disneyland’s security checkpoint. A group of guests began smoking while waiting in line, despite the presence of families nearby. Two parents, concerned about their child inhaling secondhand smoke, asked them to stop. Instead of complying, one of the smokers grew hostile, snapping, “How precious is your child?”
Tensions escalated as other guests got involved. A video from the scene shows two men shoving each other near the park’s entrance railings, with onlookers stepping back as security intervenes. While no serious injuries were reported, the incident reignited discussions about smoking rules in Disney parks—and how effectively they’re enforced.

Unlike Disneyland and Walt Disney World, which banned in-park smoking areas in 2019, Shanghai Disneyland still allows smoking in select zones.
With a handful of smoking spots scattered throughout the park – including near Roaring Rapids in Adventure Isle, Barbossa’s Bounty in Treasure Cove, Pooh and Friends Treats in Fantasyland, and the Meet Mickey Tent in Gardens of Imagination – there’s no shortage of places for smokers to go.
It did, however, clamp down on in-park smoking in 2025 by adding more warning signs across the resort and cutting the total number of smoking areas.
A Growing Problem for Disney Parks
The issue isn’t limited to Shanghai. Disneyland Paris, another international Disney park, has faced ongoing challenges with guests smoking in non-designated areas. While the park has strict no-smoking policies, reports of visitors ignoring them are widespread. Social media posts frequently document guests vaping in queues or smoking near attractions, frustrating those who follow the rules.
One cast member from Shanghai Disneyland acknowledged the enforcement struggles, stating, “There are smoking areas in the park, but people generally cannot smoke while waiting in line. However, some people smoke, and it seems that no one can stop them if they smoke quietly.”

A representative from the park’s Visitor Communication Team added, “After all, the park is mainly for children. If there are tourists smoking in the queue area and non-smoking spots, the staff will take the initiative to control them, ask the relevant people to leave, and put out the cigarettes. We have also received many tourists who hope that our park will ban smoking completely. We are gradually collecting feedback from tourists and will have internal discussions on this.”
Over at Disneyland Paris, guest complaints about smoking violations have only intensified. Reports of people lighting up during the fireworks show, in crowded pathways, and near stroller parking areas are common. One frustrated visitor wrote on Reddit, “Just sat through the entire fireworks show near a man chain-smoking the entire time in the middle of the crowd. We tried to move away, but it was packed, and we waited an hour to have a decent view. A cast member said there was nothing they could do despite two security guards just standing next to her.”
Another user described a similar experience: “Woman near us smoking during the fireworks show and ignoring us, asking three times in three different languages. Eventually got aggressive with us and started threatening us.”

For many, the lack of enforcement is the biggest issue. “If this person doesn’t have the common decency to not smoke in a crowded place, it is unlikely they would listen to an employee asking them not to smoke,” one commenter pointed out.
Others noted that cast members hesitate to intervene for fear of guests becoming hostile.
Have you ever witnessed a fight over smoking at a Disney park?

Security personnel need to enforce the rules. If they are afraid of hostility, they should find a different job. 1 or 2 people (those smoking) should not take presidence over many who are obeying the rules.
