EPCOT Announces Figment Ride Updates, But Some Fans Might Be Disappointed
EPCOT’s Journey Into Imagination with Figment is one of the most debated attractions in Disney World.
While Figment remains an iconic character, the ride itself has been considered outdated for years. Now, a newly filed permit for electrical work has sparked speculation that changes could be coming.

A Ride That Has Been Through Many Changes
Journey Into Imagination first opened in 1983 and was originally one of the most beloved attractions at EPCOT. The ride introduced guests to the Dreamfinder and Figment, taking them through a whimsical journey exploring the power of imagination. It was filled with creativity, fun effects, and a catchy theme song, One Little Spark, written by the Sherman Brothers.
However, in 1999, Disney decided to rework the ride, removing Dreamfinder entirely and minimizing Figment’s role. Fans were extremely disappointed with this version, and Disney responded by making further changes in 2002, bringing Figment back in a bigger role. Despite this improvement, many still feel the attraction never recaptured the magic of the original.
Over the years, rumors of a major refurbishment have circulated, but nothing substantial has happened—until now.

What the New EPCOT Permit Means
Disney has officially filed a permit for electrical work on Journey Into Imagination with Figment. The document confirms that MMR Constructors, Inc. will be handling the work, which is expected to be completed by March 2025.
While the permit does not indicate a full-scale refurbishment, it does raise questions. Could this be a sign of bigger things to come? EPCOT has been undergoing a massive transformation, with new attractions like Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind and Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure. Updating Figment’s ride could be the next logical step.

Could a Bigger Overhaul Be Coming?
Journey Into Imagination is one of the last untouched remnants of EPCOT’s past, and many fans believe it’s long overdue for an update. The fact that Disney is making changes—however small—suggests that the ride isn’t being ignored.
At the very least, electrical work could mean upgrades to lighting, animatronics, or ride effects. But with Figment’s continued popularity, it wouldn’t be surprising if Imagineers have something more substantial in mind for the future.
For now, all we know is that Disney is making changes. Whether they lead to something bigger remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: Figment isn’t going anywhere.
