Dollywood Takes Over Challenger Park with Dolly Parton as Captain

The expansion comes as Herschend celebrates its 75th anniversary, further cementing its status as the largest family-owned themed entertainment company in the world.

New Parks Join the Herschend Family

The acquisition brings several well-known parks under the Herschend umbrella, including:

  • Kennywood (PA) – A historic amusement park known for its legendary coasters.
  • Dutch Wonderland (PA) – A top destination for families with young children.
  • Lake Compounce (CT) – America’s oldest amusement park, home to Boulder Dash, one of the world’s best wooden coasters.
  • Adventureland (IA), Castle Park (CA), and several other regional favorites.

These properties, previously owned by Palace Entertainment, a U.S. subsidiary of Spain-based Parques Reunidos, now join Herschend’s growing list of destinations, which already includes Dollywood Parks & Resorts, Silver Dollar City, Kentucky Kingdom, Adventure Aquarium, Callaway Resort & Gardens, Newport Aquarium, The Vancouver Aquarium, and Wild Adventures Theme Park.

Beyond its theme parks, Herschend is also the steward of the World-Famous Harlem Globetrotters, Herschend Entertainment Studios, and Pink Adventure Tours.

A Game-Changer for the Industry

This acquisition is a significant moment for regional theme parks. Herschend’s focus on immersive storytelling and guest experience has made Dollywood one of the most acclaimed theme parks in the country, and fans are eager to see if similar enhancements could come to newly acquired parks.

Though no immediate changes have been announced, Herschend has emphasized its commitment to maintaining the unique identities of each park while exploring opportunities for future improvements.

The Future of Herschend Parks

With this major expansion, Herschend is now a serious competitor to corporate giants like Cedar Fair and Six Flags, proving that independently owned parks can still thrive in the industry.

Meanwhile, Dollywood continues to celebrate its milestone 40th season, adding new shows, attractions, and experiences that highlight the legacy of Dolly Parton—who remains a key figure in the park’s ongoing success.

As Herschend takes its next steps, theme park fans are eager to see how this acquisition will shape the future of Kennywood, Lake Compounce, and the other parks that now call Herschend home.
