If Peter Pan’s Flight was on your must-do list for Magic Kingdom earlier this week, you may have walked up to find the pirate ships docked.
Short breakdowns happen at every theme park, and most of us have learned to shrug and circle back later. This one was different. The attraction stopped running at some point on Monday, September 21, and never came back that day. There was no refurbishment on the calendar, and Disney didn’t share a reason for the closure or a time guests could expect it to reopen.
Tuesday morning brought more of the same. Guests arriving at rope drop found the ride still closed, and by around 1:40 p.m., there was still no movement. For families who had built their morning around this ride, that uncertainty made planning tricky.
In the meantime, a temporary hopscotch setup appeared near the entrance. Nobody would mistake it for a flight to Never Land, but it was a thoughtful touch for younger visitors, and it gave families a reason to smile in an otherwise frustrating moment. Disney has brought out similar small activities during past unexpected closures to help keep guests entertained.
At approximately 3:15 p.m. on September 22, the ride reopened. Guests didn’t waste a minute. Per Queue Times, the posted wait jumped to 35 to 40 minutes almost right away, which honestly tracks with how popular this attraction is on any normal day.
Peter Pan’s Flight has been part of Magic Kingdom since the park opened in 1971. Guests climb aboard suspended pirate ships and soar over the rooftops of London before heading into Never Land, spotting familiar faces from Disney’s 1953 animated classic along the way. Because the ride doesn’t move a large number of people each hour, the line is often one of the longest in the park, so losing it for any stretch of time is felt across Fantasyland.
This isn’t the first time the attraction has made headlines lately. In 2024, it went through a refurbishment that included updates to its Native American scene. Disney reworked parts of that sequence and added new characters while keeping Tiger Lily, part of a wider push to refresh older attractions and address storytelling elements that had faced criticism. The ride came back afterward and kept right on drawing crowds.
With so many new projects announced around Walt Disney World, fans have wondered for years which classic Magic Kingdom attractions might eventually be changed, replaced, or retired. Rest easy for now. Disney has not announced a replacement for Peter Pan’s Flight, and this week’s downtime hasn’t been linked to any major refurbishment. It remains part of the regular lineup.
The ride is open, so there’s no need to reshuffle your plans. That said, this week is a good reminder to build some flexibility into your touring day. If a high-priority ride is down, move on to another attraction and check back in the app periodically rather than waiting nearby. And if Peter Pan’s Flight is a family favorite, grabbing a Lightning Lane or riding first thing in the morning is still your best bet.

I appreciate the updates, but despise the scare tactics. The latest example of this email leads one to believe that Peter Pan’s flight is shut down permanently. My wife and I have discussed at length that these scare tactics may initially get reader’s attention, but I our case we will not continue to accept this. If it continues, we will choose to block these emails, as I am sure many others will get enough of scare tactics also.
