Disney World Quietly Pulls 6 Iconic Characters From Parks in Permanent Shift
Walt Disney World has no shortage of characters, but that doesn’t mean every familiar face sticks around forever.
Guests who visited the parks years ago may remember meeting characters who have since vanished from the regular lineup. Sometimes an attraction closes and takes its characters with it. In other cases, Disney updates its entertainment and gives newer faces more attention.
Six characters in particular once maintained a presence across Disney World’s theme parks but are no longer regularly available today.
Their stories stretch from an extinct Magic Kingdom attraction to former Disney Junior favorites at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.
Controversial Rabbit Loses His Magic Kingdom Home
Few characters on this list were as closely connected to a single attraction as Br’er Rabbit.
For decades, he played a central role in Splash Mountain at Magic Kingdom. The attraction followed his adventure and eventually sent guests plunging down its famous final drop.
That chapter ended when Disney permanently closed Splash Mountain in January 2023. The company transformed the attraction into Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, which eventually opened in 2024.
Instead of continuing Splash Mountain’s story, the replacement introduced a different adventure and character lineup inspired by The Princess and the Frog (2009).
That transformation also ended Br’er Rabbit’s longtime presence inside the attraction. With Splash Mountain gone, the character lost the Magic Kingdom experience most closely associated with him.
But he isn’t the only former Magic Kingdom character guests no longer regularly encounter.

A Magical Icon Becomes a Rare Sight
Merlin once brought an extra dose of spontaneous entertainment to Fantasyland through the Sword in the Stone ceremony.
Guests could gather around the sword while Merlin chose participants to see if they could pull it from the stone. The small show created an interactive experience that could unexpectedly turn an ordinary park visit into something memorable.
Disney eventually discontinued the ceremony, bringing Merlin’s regular live appearances connected to the experience to an end.
He didn’t disappear from Disney World entirely. Merlin remained connected to other experiences over the years and reportedly made a rare appearance in September 2026 during the character gathering celebrating the grand opening of The Magic of Disney Animation at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.
That appearance didn’t bring Merlin back to the regular lineup.
He isn’t currently a regularly scheduled meet-and-greet character, and Disney has announced no plans to revive the Sword in the Stone ceremony.

Two Characters Leave Animal Kingdom
Disney’s Animal Kingdom once offered another character experience that’s difficult to find today.
Kenai and Koda from Brother Bear (2003) previously appeared at the park. Their presence fit naturally with a destination centered around animals and nature, while giving fans of the movie a chance to encounter two characters with relatively little representation elsewhere.
Eventually, those appearances stopped.
Neither Kenai nor Koda remains part of Animal Kingdom’s regular character lineup today. Their absence has also left Brother Bear with very little representation throughout Disney World’s theme parks.
For fans of the movie, seeing either character is considerably more difficult than it once was.

Disney Junior Moves On Without Two Familiar Faces
Disney’s Hollywood Studios has also lost characters who were once familiar sights for younger visitors.
Doc McStuffins became part of the park’s Disney Junior presence, appearing in entertainment and giving children who knew her on television an opportunity to see the character off-screen.
Vampirina later became another recognizable part of the Hollywood Studios lineup. Her spooky but friendly personality offered something different from the traditional Disney characters guests could encounter elsewhere.
Disney eventually began refreshing its Disney Junior offerings at the park.
As Hollywood Studios moved forward with Disney Jr. Mickey Mouse Clubhouse Live!, featuring Mickey Mouse and other current Disney Junior characters, the previous lineup changed.
Doc McStuffins and Vampirina were among the characters who lost their regular presence.

Disney World’s Character Lineup Never Stays Frozen
Character appearances have always evolved alongside the rest of Walt Disney World.
Doc McStuffins and Vampirina disappeared as Disney Junior entertainment changed. Kenai and Koda stopped maintaining their regular presence at Animal Kingdom. Br’er Rabbit lost his longtime home when Splash Mountain closed, while Merlin’s regular Fantasyland role ended with the Sword in the Stone ceremony.
Together, the six characters represent different eras of Disney World entertainment.
Longtime visitors may still remember encountering them during previous vacations, but guests planning trips today shouldn’t expect the same opportunities.
None of the six currently maintains a regular character presence at Walt Disney World, leaving their former appearances as another reminder of just how much the parks can change over time.
