Nobody plans a Disney trip around trash cans.
But at Walt Disney World, they have always mattered more than they should. The old ones were built to disappear into whatever land you were standing in, painted and shaped to match Adventureland, Tomorrowland, or Africa. You noticed them without noticing them. That was the point.
Disney started swapping them out in June. People noticed immediately.
The replacements are solar-powered, with built-in compactors and a foot pedal. The first wave arrived unthemed, which is where most of the early complaints came from. Since then, Walt Disney Imagineering has been designing versions that match their surroundings.
Two new batches just landed. Both themed.
Five sets in EPCOT’s World Nature. Seven in Pandora: The World of AVATAR at Animal Kingdom.

World Nature
Five new solar-powered trash and recycling bins.
White fronts, gray EPCOT logos, black “TRASH” and “RECYCLE” openings. The outside panel is bright neon green.
That green is what makes them work. World Nature is built around The Land, The Seas, and Journey of Water, Inspired by Moana, so a green accent reads as deliberate there in a way it would not anywhere else in EPCOT.
They match the solar design that has been rolling out across the park since June.

Seven new sets.
Gray, with an orange stripe running under the black “TRASH” and “RECYCLE” openings.
Restrained, and correctly so. Pandora is already visually loud with floating mountains and bioluminescence. A trash can trying to compete would look absurd.
These match the design Disney has been installing at Animal Kingdom since July.
Where the Rollout Stands at Disney
EPCOT went first, starting near World Showcase in June. Since then:
Animal Kingdom started in July at the park entrance and Maharajah Jungle Trek, then Asia and Discovery Island Trails in August, and now Pandora.
Disney has confirmed the bins are still headed to Magic Kingdom, Hollywood Studios, Typhoon Lagoon, Blizzard Beach, Disney Springs, and ESPN Wide World of Sports. No timeline given.

How They Work
Solar panels in the rounded tops power compactors inside.
That compactor is the whole point. More waste per bin means fewer emptying trips for custodial cast members.
Guests open the lids by hand or foot pedal. The small front handles are for cast members, not guests.
The pedal confused enough people that Disney released an instructional video on how to open a trash can. Funny, but also telling. If a bin needs a tutorial, the design is not obvious enough.
Why Disney Fans Are Annoyed
It is not just looks.
The rounded top is the real complaint. Old cans had flat tops, and flat tops were useful. Guests set plates and drinks on them during EPCOT festivals while eating standing up. Not the intended use, but a widespread one, especially during Food and Wine when seating disappears.
Rounded tops kill that completely.
The touchless operation is genuinely more hygienic, and that deserves credit. The learning curve just caught Disney off guard.
The Themed Ones Are the Fix
The important shift here is Imagineering getting involved.
The earliest solar cans were unthemed and looked like municipal supply catalog stock. Dropping those into heavily designed environments is exactly what sets fans off, and it feeds the broader worry that Disney is sanding detail off the resort.
World Nature and Pandora are the counterargument. Both use location-specific color and logos.
Disney has also made indoor versions with the same shape but no solar panels, since a panel indoors is pointless. Those are in The Seas with the starfish logo, The Land with its green and red logo, near Soarin’ with the yellow and red logo, and around CommuniCore Hall with the EPCOT globe.
More thought than anybody expects on a garbage can.

The Real Test Is Coming
Magic Kingdom, Hollywood Studios, both water parks, Disney Springs, and ESPN Wide World of Sports are all still ahead.
Magic Kingdom is the one that matters. Most distinct themed lands on property, each with its own established look.
If the Imagineering versions hold up there, this ends up remembered as an upgrade instead of a loss.
