Major Overhaul Incoming: Disney World Reveals Hollywood Studios Makeover Plans

Walt Disney World Resort has officially filed a “general construction” permit for the Disney Villains show coming to Disney’s Hollywood Studios next year. The show will replace Lightning McQueen’s Racing Academy on Sunset Boulevard near Rock’ n’ Rollercoaster.

The recent decision to demolish Lightning McQueen’s Racing Academy marks a significant shift at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. The current attraction, which showcases a life-sized animatronic Lightning McQueen as he takes audiences on a thrilling racing simulation, will close its doors on October 7, 2024.

Walt Disney World Resort has partnered with Whiting-Turner Contracting Company for the transformation. The company has previously worked with the Central Florida Disney park on projects at EPCOT and Magic Kingdom Park.

The “general construction” permit doesn’t offer many details on the planned transformation, but work is anticipated to commence shortly after Lightning McQueen’s Racing Academy concludes operations. The construction permit is valid until September 27, 2025, and the Disney Villains show is scheduled to open sometime next summer.

New Disney Villains Show Details

The upcoming Disney Villains show is poised to bring to life some of Disney’s most infamous characters, including Maleficent, Cruella de Vil, and Captain Hook. The Magic Mirror will act as a central motif, inviting guests into an immersive space filled with drama and flair. The promise of live production numbers featuring singers and dancers and engaging set design is set to make this show a must-see attraction at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.
