Behind the Scenes: How Disney World Picks Its Beloved Characters

Have you ever wanted to audition to be one of Walt Disney World Resort or Disneyland Resort’s characters? Kayla (@kaylalittle56 on TikTok), a Disney College Program participant, recently showed her followers how.

The Character Selection Process at Walt Disney World Resort

The selection of Disney characters at Walt Disney World Resort is a meticulous process that ensures those chosen can embody the spirit and persona of beloved figures. The process typically starts with dance auditions, where entertainment managers look for the skills and body types the Disney parks currently need.

When selecting performers, Disney assesses several criteria to find the right fit. Physical appearance, including height and build, matching the character is essential. However, personality and energy are equally vital.

Participants should be able to convey emotions and engage with guests while remaining in character, be it a hero, a villain, or a whimsical animal. For many, like Kayla, the Disney College Program serves as a pathway, allowing students to work in Disney parks and attend exclusive auditions for select parade and character roles.

Roles Available for Aspiring Performers

The roles available for aspiring performers cover a broad spectrum. They range from portraying classic Disney characters, such as Mickey Mouse and Cinderella, to newer characters from recent animated films.

Sometimes, making it to the next round of an audition depends on whether your height matches the current character needs.

Auditions start with a group dance session. Entertainment managers spend “less than five minutes” teaching the group a dance, which they perform together and in small groups. “Judges” use these performances to determine whether performers will advance to the next audition round.

For those looking to leave an impression, preparation and enthusiasm are essential. Kayla recommends arriving at the audition right on time to get a higher number assignment. That way, participants have time to watch others audition and fine-tune their performances.

Kayla’s Experience

Unfortunately, Kayla wasn’t selected to advance to round two. No one in her height range made it that day, so entertainment leadership likely wasn’t looking to fill roles she could play.

“Everything happens for a reason, and I’m not upset about it…If you’re wanting to audition, I highly recommend it. It’s so fun. You get to meet so many new people. I made so many new friends. I just love to perform, so for me, it was really just like a performance.”

Past auditionees shared their stories in the comments, emphasizing that sometimes it comes down to luck.

“It took me 4 auditions to even make it through the rounds,” one commenter wrote. “The first time I auditioned, it was specifically for Cindy, Aurora and [Rapunzel] and I got cut first round. That was in 2016, but in 2019 I became friends with Cinderella so don’t take anything personal!”

“As a former Entertainment [cast member], I’m sorry darling that 5’4” at this moment did it,” said another. “Keep trying.”

Disney holds auditions in Southern California, Central Florida, and, for Disney College Program applicants, throughout the United States. Check here for updated audition information.
