Some argue that Disney has the perfect franchise on its hands but is ignoring it, and it’s unclear why they’re doing this.

The Walt Disney Company has been a trendsetter and innovator in the field of entertainment for decades now. The Mouse House—while admittedly going through a rough patch—has years of hits and franchises that have been incredibly popular with fans. There’s one particular franchise, though, that some feel Disney has been ignoring.

Outlet Highlights ‘Big Hero 6’ from Disney

In a recent article, outlet ScreenRant did a deep dive into one of Disney’s older franchises, Big Hero 6 (2014), questioning why the company had done so little with the franchise.

Despite being a major box office hit when it was released 8 years ago, as the article points out, Disney has largely left Big Hero 6 alone, not greenlighting any new sequel movies, though there was the television show Big Hero 6: The Series, which ran for three seasons from 2017 to 2021.

Big Hero 6 stars Ryan Potter, Scott Adsit, Daniel Henney, T.J. Miller, Jamie Chung, Damon Wayans Jr., Genesis Rodriguez, James Cromwell, Maya Rudolph, and Alan Tudyk.

The co-director Don Hall explained in an interview with Creative Screenwriting that “we haven’t talked about or thought about any sequels or anything like that.” The two directors (Don Hall and Chris Williams) instead shifted their focus onto Moana (2016).

Hall also went on to direct the animated feature film Raya and the Last Dragon (2021) and Strange World (2022) for Walt Disney Animation Studios. The latter was most definitely not a movie worth writing home about according to many.

Disney has most definitely not forgotten about Baymax and Big Hero 6. But it still begs the question of why they’re refusing to do more with a movie that has proven more profitable for them than most of their projects.

In fact, as ScreenRant points out, “The only Walt Disney Animation Studios movies that have ever made more than Big Hero 6 at the box office are Frozen [2013] ,Frozen II [2019], and Zootopia [2016].”

For now, it doesn’t appear like any sequel movies to the franchise are in the pipeline, but as Disney finds its footing once again in the world of cinema, perhaps this franchise is due for some revisiting.
