”Unwanted Touching” and Burglary Incidents Shake Sense of Safety at Disney World

Late Saturday night and early Sunday morning, law enforcement responded to a troubling stretch of activity at Walt Disney World Resort. The back-to-back police responses unfolded in less than 13 hours, following a month already marked by several tragic deaths across the Central Florida Disney Resort hotels.

Just weeks earlier, Walt Disney World Resort had already drawn national attention after guests speculated that a Monorail had struck a person at Disney’s Contemporary Resort. Officials later confirmed that no Monorail collision occurred, but a 31-year-old “Disney superfan” named Summer Equitz had died by suicide after falling from an internal balcony inside the Disney Resort lobby.

Not long after, 28-year-old Matthew Cohn died by suicide after falling from an exterior balcony at Bay Lake Tower at Disney’s Contemporary Resort. Disney cast members reportedly blocked off windows and areas near the pool as authorities responded to the tragedy, sparking several viral videos of towel carts and crime scene tape concealing the scene.

In that same 26-day period, three additional guests died of natural causes at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort & Spa, Disney’s Pop Century Resort, and Disney’s Saratoga Springs Resort. Investigators confirmed that foul play was not suspected in those cases.
