Disney World Faces Backlash Over Controversial American Flag Display

Changes continue on Big Thunder Mountain Railroad at Magic Kingdom Park, and the latest update includes an unusually patriotic dumpster.
In its most recent update last week, Disney Dining reported that crews were laying more tracks and starting work in the attraction queue as part of Walt Disney World Resort‘s year-long Big Thunder Mountain Railroad refurbishments. The roller coaster closed in January and will reopen in early 2026 with some “new magic.”

On Monday, WDWNT reported some new updates on the ongoing refurbishment. According to the report, new tracks have been spotted arriving via crane to the roller coaster. The crane also brought a dumpster painted to look like an American flag, bringing an unusual bit of patriotism to Frontierland.
In one of the most significant changes yet, a new seating area has appeared outside of what is usually the Big Thunder Mountain Railroad entrance. Magic Kingdom Park guests can now sit alongside the Rivers of America at several covered tables.

Speaking of the Rivers of America, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad isn’t the only ongoing transformation project in Magic Kingdom Park’s Frontierland. Even after the premiere of Tiana’s Bayou Adventure and the refreshed Country Bear Musical Jamboree last year, Frontierland isn’t done evolving.
Walt Disney Imagineers have filed early permits to demolish Tom Sawyer Island and fill in the Rivers of America to build two new Cars (2006) attractions in Frontierland. Beyond Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, Imagineers are developing the largest Magic Kingdom Park expansion ever: a Disney Villains land. Walt Disney World Resort hasn’t announced an opening date for either of these projects.
