Marvel Report Sparks Speculation Over Benedict Cumberbatch’s MCU Future

Marvel Studios has said very little about Avengers: Doomsday (2026), and that silence has become part of the strategy. As production moves forward, the studio has allowed only the broadest outlines to surface, leaving casting choices and story mechanics largely unaddressed.

The film arrives at a moment of transition for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. After years of uneven audience response and shifting release plans, Marvel’s next Avengers project carries unusual weight — not just as a sequel, but as a directional reset.

What information has emerged has done so in fragments. A casting reveal here, a comment there. Individually, they offer little clarity. Taken together, they suggest a film built around destabilizing familiar ideas rather than reinforcing them.

That pattern begins with Robert Downey Jr.’s return to the franchise, this time as Doctor Doom. Downey Jr. last appeared in the MCU as Tony Stark in Avengers: Endgame (2019), where the character died defeating Thanos.

Marvel has not explained why Doom shares Stark’s face. The studio has neither confirmed nor denied theories involving variants, possession, or narrative misdirection. For now, the decision stands as one of the film’s most provocative elements.

With Doomsday reportedly centered on multiversal fallout, attention has turned to which other characters might reappear in altered forms. One name, long associated with Marvel’s multiverse arc, has resurfaced through recent reports.

A New Report and an Old Skillset

According to industry insider Daniel Richtman, Doctor Doom will have a ā€œwizard sidekickā€ in Avengers: Doomsday who uses a ā€œSling Ring.ā€ The detail immediately calls to mind Doctor Strange, whose use of the device has become a defining visual of the character.

The report follows an earlier claim from scooper MyTimeToShineHello, who said in January that Benedict Cumberbatch would appear in the film as ā€œDoom’s wizard sidekick.ā€ Marvel Studios has not commented on either report.

If accurate, the role does not necessarily indicate the return of Doctor Strange as audiences currently understand him. Instead, it may involve a variant version of the character — an idea already well established within the MCU.

Cumberbatch has previously portrayed multiple versions of Stephen Strange in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022). The film featured the primary MCU incarnation, an Illuminati-aligned Sorcerer Supreme, and a Darkhold-corrupted variant.

That precedent allows Marvel to deploy the actor in ways that sidestep continuity expectations. A Strange variant aligned with Doctor Doom would be a departure, but not an unprecedented one.

What remains unclear is the origin of such a character or the circumstances that would place him at Doom’s side. The reports offer no explanation beyond the wizard’s apparent function and tools.

Public Denials and Narrative Gaps

Publicly, Cumberbatch has denied appearing in Avengers: Doomsday. In an interview with Variety, he said Doctor Strange would sit out the film following major rewrites tied to Jonathan Majors’ exit as Kang.

According to Cumberbatch, the character did ā€œnot [align] with this part of the story.ā€ He added that Doctor Strange will appear ā€œin a lotā€ of Avengers: Secret Wars, the film expected to follow Doomsday.

ā€œHe’s quite central to where things might go,ā€ Cumberbatch told Variety.

Those comments have fueled interpretation rather than resolution. They appear definitive on the surface, yet leave room for technical distinctions between the main MCU version of Strange and a variant incarnation.

Marvel has previously relied on similar ambiguity. Characters have been absent in name but present in form, or involved indirectly through alternate realities. The studio has not clarified whether that approach applies here.

Additional context comes from the end of Multiverse of Madness, which positioned Strange as the only hero to directly witness an Incursion — a catastrophic collision between universes. The film’s post-credits scene introduced Clea, played by Charlize Theron.

Clea recruits Strange to help repair the damage he caused. Reports have suggested the character may return in Avengers: Doomsday, though Marvel has not confirmed her involvement.

As noted by The Direct, Doctor Strange played a key role in the 2015 Secret Wars comic storyline, working alongside Doctor Doom to construct Battleworld after the collapse of the multiverse.

In that story, Strange served as Doom’s enforcer and confidant, fully aware of the reality he was helping maintain. It is a morally compromised position that aligns with the MCU’s recent portrayal of the character as increasingly burdened by consequence.

Whether Doomsday draws directly from that material remains unknown. Marvel has not indicated how closely it plans to adapt elements from Secret Wars ahead of its cinematic version.
