Animal Kingdom Pandora Closure Reported, No Reopening Confirmed

Disney’s Animal Kingdom visitors faced an unexpected setback this week after one of Pandora – The World of Avatar’s attractions remained unavailable for an entire operating day.

Since welcoming guests in 2017, Pandora – The World of Avatar has established itself as one of the most visited destinations at Walt Disney World Resort. Based on James Cameron’s Avatar films, the land transports visitors to the alien moon of Pandora years after the events of the first movie, complete with floating mountains, lush landscapes, themed dining, and two major attractions: Avatar Flight of Passage and Na’vi River Journey.

While Avatar Flight of Passage delivers an exhilarating banshee flight simulation, Na’vi River Journey offers a calmer experience that has become a favorite among families and guests seeking a more relaxed attraction.

Na’vi River Journey invites guests aboard boats that glide through Pandora’s glowing rainforest, surrounded by illuminated plants, unusual wildlife, and atmospheric music inspired by the world of Avatar. The attraction is widely regarded as one of Walt Disney World’s most visually striking dark rides thanks to its immersive environments and detailed scenery.

The finale features the Na’vi Shaman of Songs, a remarkably realistic Audio-Animatronic that celebrates the harmony between Pandora’s inhabitants and nature through music. The figure continues to be recognized as one of the most advanced animatronics Walt Disney Imagineering has produced.

Unlike Flight of Passage, the attraction has no height requirement, making it accessible to visitors of every age and a popular option for families with young children.

Reports indicate Na’vi River Journey never opened during Early Theme Park Entry, which began at 7:30 a.m., and the attraction remained closed for the rest of the day. When Disney’s Animal Kingdom ended operations at 7:00 p.m., the ride had still not reopened.

The prolonged closure led to warnings for guests planning to spend time in Pandora, with visitors encouraged to check the My Disney Experience app before making the walk into the land.

With one of Pandora’s two attractions unavailable, the extended downtime likely redirected crowds toward Avatar Flight of Passage, Kilimanjaro Safaris, Expedition Everest, and other major rides throughout the park, potentially contributing to longer standby waits.

Disney has not shared a reason for the all-day closure, and it is not yet known when Na’vi River Journey will return to normal operation. As with any attraction, unexpected downtime can occur, and guests are encouraged to monitor the My Disney Experience app for the latest updates.

The disruption comes as Disney’s Animal Kingdom continues through one of its largest transformations in years. The former DinoLand U.S.A. is being replaced by Pueblo Esperanza, a Tropical Americas-inspired expansion scheduled to debut in 2027. The new area will introduce headline attractions based on Encanto and Indiana Jones as Walt Disney Imagineering continues construction on the project.

Thomas Hitchen

When he’s not thinking about the Magic Kingdom, Thomas is usually reading a book, becoming desperately obsessed with fictional characters, or baking something delicious (his favorite is chocolate cake -- to bake and to eat). He's a dreamer and grew up on Mulan saving the world, Jim Hawkins soaring through the stars, and Padmé Amidala fighting a Nexu. At the Parks, he loves to ride Everest, stroll down Main Street with an overstuffed pin lanyard around his neck, and eat as many Mickey-shaped ice creams as possible. His favorite character is Han Solo (yes, he did shoot first), and his favorite TV show is Buffy the Vampire Slayer except when it's One Tree Hill. He loves sandy beach walks, forest hikes, and foodie days out in the Big City. Thomas lives in England, UK, with his fiancée, baby, and their dog, a Border Collie called Luna.
