After 40 Years, Disney World Starts Making New Changes at EPCOT

Walt Disney World is making another round of changes at EPCOT, and this time, the work involves a location that has welcomed guests for 40 years.

Disney has spent the last several years transforming EPCOT, introducing new attractions, refreshing older spaces, and updating areas that have been part of the park for decades.

However, not every improvement involves a major construction project.

Sometimes, smaller changes can signal that Disney is preparing to give an aging location some additional attention.

That’s exactly what appears to be happening near one of EPCOT’s longtime restaurants, where recent activity has raised questions about what Disney has planned next.

And considering the location recently underwent a refurbishment, the timing is particularly interesting.

Disney World Makes New Changes at Historic EPCOT Location

Coral Reef Restaurant, located at The Seas with Nemo & Friends pavilion, has been part of EPCOT since January 15, 1986.

The restaurant originally opened alongside The Living Seas pavilion, offering visitors a dining experience unlike anything else at Walt Disney World.

Guests can enjoy their meals while watching marine life swim through an enormous aquarium visible from the dining room.

Four decades later, Coral Reef remains one of EPCOT’s longest-running restaurants.

Now, Disney appears to be making additional improvements outside the dining location.

According to reports from WDWNT, several new cuts have appeared in the concrete pavement near Coral Reef Restaurant.

The cuts run through the reddish walkway, dividing portions of the existing concrete into smaller sections.

Some extend into the neighboring gray pavement, while others surround a circular manhole cover.

Although the changes are noticeable, the affected walkway remains accessible to visitors.

Disney had not removed the scored concrete when the work was documented.

The cuts could indicate preparations for replacing sections of pavement, although Disney has not confirmed what comes next.

Recent Refurbishment Already Brought Improvements

The latest development follows another round of work at Coral Reef Restaurant.

The dining location closed on September 8, 2026, for refurbishment, with updates reportedly taking place in portions of its kitchen.

Disney also introduced decorative pavement near the restaurant’s entrance.

The updated surface features a wavy design with small white seashells embedded throughout the concrete, complementing the restaurant’s underwater atmosphere.

It’s a relatively minor change, but one that gives the surrounding area a refreshed appearance.

Now, with additional cuts appearing nearby, Disney could be preparing to extend that same design into other sections of the walkway.

However, the company has not confirmed whether more decorative pavement will be installed.

What Happens Next at EPCOT?

Other details around the restaurant suggest Disney has been paying attention to the surrounding outdoor spaces.

Rolling planters remain positioned beneath the nearby monorail beam, close to the pavilion’s familiar blue wave mural.

A curved section of pavement in that area already features white shell flecks.

For now, it’s unclear whether the latest cuts are connected to the earlier improvements or represent separate maintenance work.

Disney has also not announced another restaurant closure related to the pavement activity.

While this isn’t the kind of major project that typically attracts attention at EPCOT, smaller improvements can make a difference in keeping longtime locations looking their best.

After 40 years, Coral Reef Restaurant remains a familiar part of the park, and Disney’s latest work suggests the surrounding area could receive more attention.

Whether that means additional decorative pavement or something else entirely remains to be seen.
