Disney+ Halts New Marvel and ‘Star Wars’ Shows From 2027

Disney’s biggest franchises are disappearing from its streaming calendar.

Marvel and Star Wars helped establish Disney+ after its 2019 launch. The Mandalorian, WandaVision, Loki, and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier gave subscribers a steady supply of major live-action releases.

That era now appears close to ending.

Disney has only three confirmed live-action Marvel and Star Wars series left on its Disney+ slate. All three have finished filming, and nothing has been publicly dated to replace them after March 2027.

The cancellation of Wonder Man Season 2 has made the gap even clearer. Unless Disney announces more projects, both franchises will stop releasing new live-action shows once the remaining series arrive.

Disney Has Nothing Confirmed Beyond March 2027

Marvel’s next series is VisionQuest, which will premiere on October 14, 2026.

Paul Bettany will return as White Vision, continuing the character’s story after WandaVision. Its five-month shoot in the United Kingdom wrapped in July 2025, more than a year before its release.

Star Wars will return with Ahsoka Season 2 in early 2027.

Filming finished in October 2025. The new season will arrive roughly three and a half years after the first, following a delay that has left the franchise absent from Disney+ throughout 2026.

That makes 2026 the first year since Disney+ launched without a new season of a live-action Star Wars show.

Previous years brought The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Andor, Ahsoka, The Acolyte, and Skeleton Crew.

Marvel’s final confirmed project is Daredevil: Born Again Season 3.

Vincent D’Onofrio revealed that filming wrapped in July, with the season expected to premiere in March 2027. No other live-action Marvel or Star Wars series has been publicly scheduled beyond it.

Both studios have animated productions in development, but no announced live-action successor is ready to continue either franchise’s Disney+ output.

Several potential shows have also disappeared from the pipeline.

Marvel paused Nova, Strange Academy, and Terror, Inc. in 2025. Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige later confirmed that Nova was being developed as a movie instead.

Lucasfilm made a similar move with Lando. The project was originally planned as a Disney+ series before becoming a potential feature film, although its current status remains unclear.

Both studios now appear more interested in directing their biggest projects toward theaters than producing another large wave of expensive streaming shows.

Disney Has Been Cutting Back for Years

The empty schedule follows several difficult years for both franchises on Disney+.

The Acolyte was canceled after one season following fierce arguments over its characters, pacing, writing, and handling of Star Wars lore.

Disney Entertainment co-chairman Alan Bergman later said its performance was not strong enough to justify its reported $230 million cost.

The series also faced review-bombing and harassment directed at lead actor Amandla Stenberg and showrunner Leslye Headland.

Skeleton Crew received warmer reviews but attracted limited attention.

Its two-episode premiere failed to enter Nielsen’s streaming top 10, placing it below 382 million viewing minutes during its opening week. Disney has not announced a second season.

Marvel has faced similar problems.

Secret Invasion was criticized for its confused plot, slow pacing, underused cast, and AI-generated opening credits. It holds a 53% critics score and a 43% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.

She-Hulk: Attorney at Law divided viewers over its comedy, visual effects, and unconventional finale.

Ironheart also received a mixed response, earning a 57 Metascore and a 3.4 user rating amid complaints about its tone and character development.

Even Wonder Man struggled despite strong reviews.

The series earned a 91% Rotten Tomatoes score and an Emmy nomination for Yahya Abdul-Mateen II. However, it appeared in Nielsen’s streaming top 10 for only one week.

Disney had already signaled that its output would fall.

Then-CEO Bob Iger said in 2023 that Disney would focus on “spending less on what we make, and making less” while targeting $3 billion in non-sports content savings.

He also admitted Marvel’s expansion into television had “diluted focus and attention.”

Josh D’Amaro succeeded Iger as Disney CEO in March 2026. Disney now appears focused on fewer streaming productions, while reserving more major characters and stories for theaters.

Disney+ is not abandoning Marvel or Star Wars entirely. Both franchises will remain on the platform through animated projects, library titles, and movies added after their theatrical releases.

However, their constant flow of new live-action shows is ending.

VisionQuest, Ahsoka Season 2, and Daredevil: Born Again Season 3 increasingly resemble the final releases from Disney’s previous streaming strategy.

Without another announcement, Disney’s confirmed live-action Marvel and Star Wars pipeline will end in March 2027.
