New ‘Lion King’ Sequel Gets Imminent Release, Ignores 2019 Remake and ‘Mufasa’
When Disney released The Lion King in 1994, it wasn’t just another animated hit — it became a generational touchstone. The film’s mix of emotional storytelling, striking art direction, and unforgettable music built a cultural legacy that no sequel or remake has managed to eclipse. In fact, the same might be said of any 2D animated Disney feature.
Its follow-ups — The Lion King II: Simba’s Pride and The Lion King 1½ — are viewed as nostalgic treats by fans, but they remain in the long shadow cast by the original. The same goes for the 2019 live-action remake, which earned over $1.6 billion worldwide, and that film’s recent prequel Mufasa: The Lion King, which revisited the royal family’s past.
But despite their commercial success, the version which fans continue to embrace isn’t the ultra-detailed reboot or its prequel, but the vibrant, 2D animated Africa of 1994.

Now, The Lion King (1994) is getting another official follow-up set in the same universe as those original films, or, at the very least, the very first one. In September, Disney and Dynamite Entertainment announced the launch of a brand-new comic book series (as reported by Flickering Myth).
The story is set during the “golden time” of the film, when Simba was a young cub, before the wicked Scar’s rise to power. “The Lion King” #1 releases later this month. A sneak peak teases gorgeous artwork that closely resembles that of the film, courtesy of writer and artist Edwin Galmon, who said, “I hope people really enjoy the story we have cooked up! As a kid my favorite parts of The Lion King movie were all the scenes featuring Mufasa and Simba together because I related to how much I love and respect my dad.”
He added, “With that in mind, I wanted to have more father-son bonding, loving guidance, goofy playtimes and mentorship themes for Simba to enjoy with his dad.”
The universe established in the 1994 film will also live on in other corners of the entertainment world, as a Lion King area is coming to Disneyland Paris’ new Disney Adventure World. Known as the Pride Lands, it will feature a major log-flume attraction as revealed in concept art, and other features that pay homage to the beloved classic.
