Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind – What You Need to Know Before Riding

Walt Disney World is always innovating, and one of its most exciting additions in recent years is Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind.

This thrilling, family-friendly coaster is located in EPCOT’s World Discovery and has quickly become a must-ride attraction. If you’re planning a trip, here’s everything you need to know about experiencing this out-of-this-world adventure.

The Story Behind Cosmic Rewind

Located in EPCOT’s World Discovery, Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind transports Guests into the Wonders of Xandar Pavilion, a fictional cultural exchange between Earth and the planet Xandar.

The adventure begins in the Galaxarium, where Guests learn about the differences between Xandar and Earth’s galaxies. This immersive queue experience provides fascinating details about Xandarian technology and culture.

However, things don’t go according to plan like any great adventure. A cosmic crisis arises, and Guests are recruited by Rocket Raccoon, Groot, Gamora, and Star-Lord (Chris Pratt) to help save the galaxy.

What follows is a high-speed, action-packed mission through space with the Guardians leading the way.

The Ride Experience

Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind isn’t just another roller coaster; it introduces a first-of-its-kind “omnicoaster” system, allowing ride vehicles to rotate 360 degrees while following the track. This means Guests are always facing the action, making for a fully immersive experience.

Key Features:

  • First-ever reverse launch on a Disney coaster
  • One of the longest fully enclosed coasters in the world
  • Omnidirectional ride vehicles (Starjumpers) that rotate 360 degrees
  • State-of-the-art special effects and projection technology
  • A thrilling soundtrack with multiple song variations

Each Starjumper accommodates four Guests with individual pull-down safety bars.

The combination of motion, music, and storyline makes Cosmic Rewind one of the most unique attractions in Walt Disney World.

Height Requirement and Ride Intensity

Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind has a height requirement of 42 inches.

This makes it more accessible than high-speed coasters like Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster, Space Mountain, and Expedition Everest, but slightly more intense than Big Thunder Mountain, Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, and Slinky Dog Dash rides.

While family-friendly, the ride does feature high speeds, sudden turns, and a reverse launch, making it an exhilarating experience for thrill-seekers.

Motion Sickness Considerations

If you’re sensitive to motion sickness, Cosmic Rewind may pose some challenges.

The combination of rotating ride vehicles, a backward launch, and immersive screens has led some riders to report mild dizziness or nausea.

Tips to Reduce Motion Sickness:

  • Avoid multiple rides in a row if you’re prone to motion sickness.
  • Consider taking motion sickness medication beforehand if needed.
  • Request to sit in rows five or six, as these seats tend to have slightly less intensity.

The Soundtrack: A Galactic Mixtape

A huge part of what makes Cosmic Rewind so exciting is its soundtrack. Like the Guardians of the Galaxy films, music plays a major role in the experience.

Each ride features one of six classic tracks, randomly selected before launch:

  • “September” – Earth, Wind & Fire
  • “Disco Inferno” – The Trammps
  • “One Way or Another” – Blondie
  • “I Ran” – A Flock of Seagulls
  • “Conga” – Gloria Estefan
  • “Everybody Wants to Rule the World” – Tears for Fears

Guests won’t know which song they’ll get until takeoff, adding an element of surprise to every ride.

How to Ride: Standby Queue and Lightning Lane

Standby Queue

Since its opening, Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind initially used a virtual queue system, but as of 2025, it now offers a traditional standby queue.

This means Guests can wait in line as they would for other major attractions, eliminating the need for a boarding group.

Important Notes:

  • Arrive early, as Cosmic Rewind remains one of the most popular attractions at EPCOT.
  • During peak times, wait times may exceed 90+ minutes, especially in the afternoons.
  • The queue experience includes interactive elements and storytelling, making the wait more engaging.

Individual Lightning Lane

Individual Lightning Lane purchases are available through the My Disney Experience app for those who prefer to skip the standby queue. Pricing varies based on demand, but expect it to be similar to Rise of the Resistance.

Booking Tips:

  • Lightning Lane reservations open at 7:00 a.m. for Disney Resort Guests and at park opening for all other Guests.
  • Availability is limited, so book as early as possible.

Extended Evening Hours Perk

Guests staying at Disney Deluxe Resorts and Deluxe Villa Resorts have an extra opportunity to ride Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind.

During select Extended Evening Hours at EPCOT, eligible Guests can access the standby queue to experience the ride with significantly lower wait times.

This exclusive benefit makes Deluxe Resort stays even more appealing, especially for those eager to experience EPCOT’s most popular ride.
