15 Fun Facts About Disney’s Goofy

Goofy

15. A Goof by Any Other Name

Before Goofy was the lovable klutz we love today, he went through several different monikers before finally landing the name we know him by today. In 1932, Goofy’s original name was Dippy Dawg, and he was portrayed as a much older backwoods hick stereotype. Dippy Dawg was later updated to a much younger version, similar to the Goofy we know today, but with a different color palate. He was renamed Goofy in 1936 in the Mickey Mouse Cartoon Orphan’s Benefit, during which he performed a comical ballet sequence with Clarabelle Cow and Horace Horsecollar. Following a series of shorts and outings with Mickey and Donald, the 1950s saw a new side of Goofy in the “Everyman” years. In these shorts, Goofy’s name was changed to George Geef, an average Joe trying to conquer life’s daily challenges such as dieting, road rage, and golf. Although quite a different direction from the Goofy we all know and love, he certainly has his distinct eccentric charm. Eventually, Goofy went back to his current name classic design we know today with the “How To” shorts, and appearances in other media such as Mickey’s House of Mouse, The Three Musketeers, and Kingdom Hearts. Though he may go through many names and guises, there is no debate that there is only one Goofy.
