Disney World Loses More Guest Space as Resort Closures Pile Up Ahead of Holidays
Walt Disney World Resort is approaching another holiday season with several attractions unavailable, hotel renovations underway, and additional closures scheduled into 2028. Now, part of Disney’s Animal Kingdom has joined the growing list.
A section of Discovery River Amphitheater has been blocked off ahead of Santa’s Holiday Grove, restricting access to a waterfront seating area near the park’s ongoing Tropical Americas construction project.
The restriction is relatively small compared with other Disney World closures. However, it arrives while Magic Kingdom has two attractions undergoing lengthy refurbishments, a water park remains closed, and multiple Disney Resort hotels are preparing for projects extending into 2027 and 2028.

Disney’s Animal Kingdom Closes Part of Discovery River Amphitheater
The southern portion of Discovery River Amphitheater, located across from Finding Nemo: The Big Blue… and Beyond!, was reported blocked off on November 5, 2026.
Movable planters prevent access to part of the waterfront seating area, although the northeastern section near Expedition Everest remains accessible.
The amphitheater currently hosts no regular entertainment, but guests have been able to use the area for seating and views across Discovery River. The southern section also offers a vantage point overlooking construction associated with Disney’s Tropical Americas project.
The restriction comes ahead of the debut of Santa’s Holiday Grove, a new seasonal experience at Disney’s Animal Kingdom.
According to Disney’s official holiday information, the experience will feature Santa Claus, intermittent snow flurries, seasonal food and beverages, and holiday music near Theater in the Wild.
Disney has not published a specific reopening date for the restricted seating section. The closure does not affect the entire amphitheater or represent a park-wide shutdown.

Magic Kingdom Loses Two Attractions During the Holiday Season
Elsewhere at Walt Disney World, Magic Kingdom visitors are already dealing with two notable attraction closures.
Tiana’s Bayou Adventure temporarily closed on November 2, 2026, for routine refurbishment. Disney’s official attraction page lists December 2026 as the expected reopening window.
The operating calendar has indicated a possible December 18 return, although guests should confirm that date before planning a visit around the attraction.
The closure follows months of attention surrounding the Frontierland ride, which opened in 2024. Inside the Magic previously covered the attraction’s November 2 closure, including the temporary loss of Tiana’s Bayou General.
Meanwhile, Walt Disney’s Carousel of Progress has been unavailable since July 6, 2026.
Unlike Tiana’s shorter refurbishment, the Tomorrowland attraction is undergoing an extensive reimagining expected to keep it closed until late spring 2027.
Disney is updating the attraction’s presentation of technological progress, including a new introduction featuring an Audio-Animatronic figure of Walt Disney. Inside the Magic previously examined the announced reopening window.
Guests visiting Magic Kingdom before that reopening will need to plan without the longtime attraction.

Disney World Water Park Closure Extends Into January 2027
The temporary closures aren’t confined to Magic Kingdom and Animal Kingdom.
Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon Water Park is currently unavailable for seasonal refurbishment, leaving Disney’s Blizzard Beach as the resort’s operating water park.
According to Disney’s updated Typhoon Lagoon calendar, the water park is scheduled to reopen January 27, 2027.
That is a more specific reopening date than the earlier spring 2027 estimate included in preliminary refurbishment information.
The change matters for families planning winter vacations, particularly travelers who expected to visit Typhoon Lagoon during their stay.
Although Disney continues operating Blizzard Beach, the two water parks offer different attractions and themed environments. Guests who specifically want to experience Typhoon Lagoon should check its operating calendar before purchasing tickets or finalizing their itinerary.

Disney World Hotel Refurbishments Will Continue Through 2028
Some of the longest-running projects are scheduled at Disney’s resort hotels.
At Disney’s BoardWalk Inn and BoardWalk Villas, the Luna Park Pool, Luna Park Crazy Play Area, and Leaping Horse Libations are scheduled to close January 11, 2027, for maintenance extending through April.
Disney confirms that the Villas Pool and Inn Pool will remain available during that period.
The changes could be especially important for families choosing BoardWalk accommodations because of the resort’s recreational facilities. Inside the Magic has also covered the wider slate of hotel closures.
Additional refurbishment activity is planned at other Disney properties, including Art of Animation Resort, Animal Kingdom Lodge, and Port Orleans Riverside.
One of the longest announced projects involves Disney’s Art of Animation Resort, where phased guest room renovations are scheduled from mid-June 2027 through October 2028.
According to Disney’s Art of Animation resort information, guests may encounter daytime maintenance activity and modified walking routes while the hotel continues operating.
This distinction is important: a hotel undergoing phased refurbishment is not necessarily closed to overnight guests.

Disney Skyliner Transportation Shutdown Scheduled for January 2027
Walt Disney World is also preparing for a temporary transportation interruption.
The Disney Skyliner will close from January 24 through January 30, 2027, for scheduled maintenance.
The gondola system connects Disney’s Hollywood Studios and EPCOT’s International Gateway with Art of Animation, Caribbean Beach, Pop Century, and Riviera resorts.
Disney confirms on its official Skyliner information page that complimentary bus transportation will remain available during the closure.
An additional maintenance period is listed for January 24 through February 2, 2028, on Disney’s resort refurbishment notices.
Inside the Magic previously reported on the planned 2028 Skyliner shutdown, giving guests another date range to consider when selecting accommodations.

What Disney World Guests Should Know Before Booking
The expanding refurbishment calendar doesn’t mean Disney World is shutting down all at once.
The projects span multiple parks, hotels, recreational facilities, and transportation services, with different schedules and purposes.
For holiday travelers, the most immediate considerations include the partial Animal Kingdom amphitheater restriction, Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, Carousel of Progress, and Typhoon Lagoon.
Guests planning trips in 2027 or 2028 should pay closer attention to hotel amenities, room refurbishment notices, and the Skyliner’s scheduled maintenance periods.
A hotel may remain open while individual amenities are unavailable, just as a theme park can continue normal operations while an attraction undergoes refurbishment.
Before booking, visitors should review Disney’s official operating calendars and resort notices for their exact travel dates. With work scheduled through October 2028, the attractions and amenities available during one Disney World vacation may differ considerably from those available during another.
