Why Is Everyone Suddenly Talking About Disney Cool Girls?

Okay, we need to talk about this. New York Magazine just declared the Disney adult era over. Done. Finished. And the new thing? Disney cool girls.

Yep, that’s a real label now. And honestly, we have some thoughts.

Where Did This Come From?

The Cut, which is New York Magazine’s fashion and culture site, published a piece called “Good-bye, Disney Adults; Hello, Disney Cool Girls.” It was written by contributing writer Lindsey Bales, and it’s all about a new wave of Disney fans who are bringing serious fashion to the parks.

These aren’t people dressed head to toe as Minnie Mouse. They’re fans who treat park days like a runway, mixing trendy outfits with little Disney touches. For them, planning the outfit is half the fun of the trip.

So What’s the Difference?

Good question. Let’s be real, both Disney adults and Disney cool girls love Disney. That part hasn’t changed.

The difference is mostly the look. When people make fun of Disney adults online, they usually picture super-themed outfits that some people call “cringe.” Disney cool girls, on the other hand, are all about personal style. Think trendy pieces with a pair of ears or a vintage Disney tee thrown in.

Atlanta creator Jackson Moehler told The Cut, “People are trying to change the narrative of the Disney adult that isn’t weird.” So basically, it’s a rebrand. Same love for Disney, cooler outfits.

Meet the Cool Girls

The article highlighted a bunch of creators leading the way, mostly on TikTok.

Stephanie Arant, who posts as @shhtephs, mixes things like baggy jorts and ballet flats with white socks with Disney ears or a graphic tee. Very fashion girlie.

Alex Haas, known as @evergladescowgirl, has a video where she’s in Fantasyland wearing a raccoon-tail hat, a vintage-style Tinker Bell shirt, and striped tights. Bold? Yes. Iconic? Also yes.

Ashley Wilbraham, who goes by @ashwilbo, says picking her outfit is part of the whole excitement of a park day. And creator Jiminy Jenny is out there posting about the Disney fan community too.

Even Disney Merch Is Getting Cooler

The Cut also gave a shoutout to Bobby Kim, whose streetwear background has helped shape Disney merchandise. The way the article puts it, fans and Disney kind of feed off each other. Fans come up with their own Disney style, and those ideas can end up inspiring new merch.

Kim says the Disney cool girl label is a point of pride, not an insult. He said it seems to say, “Look at how I’m dressing, how I am piecing this together, I am creating art.” Okay, we see you.

But Can We Talk About the Money?

Here’s where we get a little skeptical. Disney is already expensive. Like, really expensive. Tickets, hotels, food, travel. It adds up fast.

Now there’s this whole trend about having the perfect, trendy, social media-ready park outfit? Vintage finds, designer-looking pieces, cute accessories? That’s not cheap either.

For a lot of fans, this could feel kind of exclusionary. Not everyone has the budget to be a Disney cool girl. And if “Disney adult” was used to make fun of people, are we just swapping one label for another that leaves people out in a different way?

Wear What You Want, Honestly

Here’s our take. If you love planning a cute park outfit, go for it. If you’d rather show up in a comfy tee and your oldest sneakers, that’s totally fine too. You’ll be walking 20,000 steps either way.

There’s no right way to be a Disney fan. Disney adult, Disney cool girl, or just a person who really likes Dole Whip, you belong at the parks.

So, which one are you?
