Tower of Terror Breaks Down as Disney World Guest Captures Lights on Evacuation

Numerous updates have hit the Tower of Terror this week.

The voice behind one of Disney’s Hollywood Studios’ best-known preshows may be heading back to the recording booth. Mark Silverman, who recreated Rod Serling’s narration for The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror, recently posted on Instagram that he had stopped by Walt Disney Imagineering’s headquarters in Glendale, California.

The visit caught fans’ attention, but Silverman’s answer to one follower added fuel. When asked whether guests might soon hear something new from him at Disney, he replied: “Well…. could be.”

Rod Serling died in 1975, almost two decades before the attraction opened on July 22, 1994. Imagineers needed a performer who could recreate his voice. Silverman has said that Serling’s widow, Carol Serling, personally chose him after auditions. He recorded the narration in a three-hour session in Glendale, and Disney paired that performance with existing footage of Serling to create the library preshow guests see today.

That preshow tells the story of guests who vanished on Halloween night in 1939, before riders board a service elevator for supernatural encounters and sudden drops. While Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, Toy Story Land, and Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway have reshaped the park around it, the tower still rules the skyline at the end of Sunset Boulevard.

Silverman’s visit comes while the Hollywood Tower Hotel is undergoing exterior refurbishment. Scaffolding has wrapped portions of the building throughout 2026, with more reported in August and work spreading to the back of the structure in September.

That kind of maintenance is standard for a building of this age and size, and it doesn’t necessarily mean the ride itself is changing. Still, the timing has longtime fans watching closely.

Disney has reworked a version of the Tower of Terror before. Disney California Adventure’s version closed in January 2017 and reopened that year as Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT! There’s no evidence Walt Disney World has similar plans, and Silverman’s possible involvement would suggest any updates keep the Twilight Zone roots intact. His visit could also be tied to a different project.

Disney has not announced new narration, story changes, or a timeline for an announcement.

Guest Video Shows a Lights-On Evacuation

Instagram user miaamiaa_ also shared footage of a lights-on evacuation. The video went up on October 19, 2026, though the caption notes it happened on a previous trip. “Imagine getting STUCK on Disney World’s Tower of Terror!” the caption begins, later asking, “Would you still ride the Tower of Terror after experiencing this?!”

In the clip, the elevator descends slowly with guests in full view, then its doors open onto a service floor lined with tools and equipment as a cast member begins the evacuation.

Evacuations aren’t unusual at Disney World, from exiting Rock ’n’ Roller Coaster at its highest point to stepping into the Hundred Acre Wood on The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh.

When he’s not thinking about the Magic Kingdom, Thomas is usually reading a book, becoming desperately obsessed with fictional characters, or baking something delicious (his favorite is chocolate cake -- to bake and to eat). He's a dreamer and grew up on Mulan saving the world, Jim Hawkins soaring through the stars, and Padmé Amidala fighting a Nexu. At the Parks, he loves to ride Everest, stroll down Main Street with an overstuffed pin lanyard around his neck, and eat as many Mickey-shaped ice creams as possible. His favorite character is Han Solo (yes, he did shoot first), and his favorite TV show is Buffy the Vampire Slayer except when it's One Tree Hill. He loves sandy beach walks, forest hikes, and foodie days out in the Big City. Thomas lives in England, UK, with his fiancée, baby, and their dog, a Border Collie called Luna.
