Confirmed: Disney World’s Pirates of the Caribbean Scheduled for Changes

Disney has filed a pair of construction permits for Pirates of the Caribbean at Magic Kingdom, and together they cover every part of the attraction, from the fortress walls out front to the show building housing the burning town.

The filings were submitted to Orange County by Disney’s Sourcing & Procurement team. One is tied to the address for the attraction’s facade and queue, the other to its show building. The facade and queue permit takes in the fort-style exterior that defines the Caribbean Plaza corner of Adventureland, along with the stone-walled switchback queue that funnels guests down to the loading dock.

The second permit covers the structure that holds the boat flume, the ride’s Audio-Animatronics, and its large-scale sets. That includes the finale in the burning town and the scenes with Captain Jack Sparrow, who was added to the ride in 2006 on the back of the film series’ success.

Both permits contract Buena Vista Construction Company, Disney’s own construction company. According to the filings, the company will “Provide labor, materials, and/or electrical for construction.” No further scope is given. Buena Vista Construction is responsible for a wide range of jobs across Walt Disney World, some routine and some substantial, so its presence on the permits isn’t an indicator of project size on its own.

Disney has not announced any closure or refurbishment window for Pirates of the Caribbean. The attraction is running normally and is absent from the official refurbishment schedule.

That could change. Permits of this type regularly come before planned downtime, and it would not be surprising to see the ride added to the refurbishment calendar in the next several weeks. Another possibility is overnight work. Disney often schedules electrical and maintenance projects at its busiest attractions after hours so daytime operations aren’t affected.

Pirates of the Caribbean set sail in Florida in December 1973, a little over two years after Magic Kingdom opened. It was added largely in response to guests who had ridden the 1967 Disneyland version and expected a Florida counterpart. More than 50 years on, it remains a steady crowd draw, its shadowy queue and unhurried cruise through plundered ports offering reliable relief from the Central Florida heat.

Given its age and its role as one of Adventureland’s marquee rides, regular upkeep is expected. The attraction has been updated before, most notably in 2018, when the auction scene was revised.

Guests visiting Magic Kingdom soon do not need to change their plans at this time. Those set on riding should monitor the Walt Disney World website and the My Disney Experience app, since any closure would likely be announced with advance notice. If the work happens overnight, guests may not see any difference at all.

Inside the Magic will continue tracking Pirates of the Caribbean and any further permit activity at Magic Kingdom.

Thomas Hitchen

When he’s not thinking about the Magic Kingdom, Thomas is usually reading a book, becoming desperately obsessed with fictional characters, or baking something delicious (his favorite is chocolate cake -- to bake and to eat). He's a dreamer and grew up on Mulan saving the world, Jim Hawkins soaring through the stars, and Padmé Amidala fighting a Nexu. At the Parks, he loves to ride Everest, stroll down Main Street with an overstuffed pin lanyard around his neck, and eat as many Mickey-shaped ice creams as possible. His favorite character is Han Solo (yes, he did shoot first), and his favorite TV show is Buffy the Vampire Slayer except when it's One Tree Hill. He loves sandy beach walks, forest hikes, and foodie days out in the Big City. Thomas lives in England, UK, with his fiancée, baby, and their dog, a Border Collie called Luna.
