The ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Trailer Has Fans Asking One Huge Robert Downey Jr. Question

The first trailer for Avengers: Doomsday (2026) has finally arrived, offering fans their first proper look at the next Avengers crossover after months of teasers and speculation.

Doomsday has a massive ensemble cast that includes Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Tom Hiddleston (Loki), Chris Evans (Steve Rogers), Paul Rudd (Scott Lang/Ant-Man), Pedro Pascal (Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic), Ian McKellen (Erik Lehnsherr/Magneto), and Patrick Stewart (Charles Xavier/Professor X). While the footage showcases returning heroes, new alliances, and the arrival of Doctor Doom, it has also reignited one of the biggest debates surrounding the film since Robert Downey Jr.’s surprise casting was announced.

Will the Avengers Think Doctor Doom Is a Tony Stark Variant?

Back at Marvel Studios’ San Diego Comic-Con panel in 2024, Downey shocked fans by stepping onto the stage in full Doctor Doom attire before removing his metal mask, confirming he would return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) as Victor von Doom rather than Tony Stark.

Since then, one question has overshadowed almost every discussion about his casting: Will the Avengers actually recognize Victor von Doom’s face?

The trailer doesn’t answer that question, but it does give audiences their first in-canon look at Downey’s performance as Doom, making it the perfect time to revisit what Marvel Studios and directors Anthony and Joe Russo have already said.

Speaking to The Times last year, the Russos teased that there is a story reason behind Downey playing Doom, saying, “We can’t explain that as it’s part of the story.”

Recently, in an interview with Soundsphere, the directing duo added that the physical resemblance between Doom and Stark will be addressed, explaining that while they couldn’t reveal any details, “it will all make sense when you watch the movies [Doomsday and Secret Wars].”

It’s important to remember that Victor von Doom is not Tony Stark.

In Marvel Comics, Doom is the ruler of Latveria and the Fantastic Four’s greatest enemy. Although some fans believe he’ll be a Stark variant—and point to the 2016 Infamous Iron Man comic as evidence—the Russos have confirmed the two are separate characters in the film.

Whether Earth’s Mightiest Heroes recognize Doom’s face remains one of Avengers: Doomsday‘s biggest mysteries, but after finally hearing Downey’s transformed performance in the trailer, Marvel fans now know one thing for certain: this isn’t simply Tony Stark in a different suit.

Avengers: Doomsday will be released on December 18, 2026. The sequel, Avengers: Secret Wars, which will conclude Phase Six of the MCU, is scheduled to hit theaters on December 17, 2027.
