Disneyland has temporarily closed Matterhorn Bobsleds, removing one of the park’s most recognizable attractions from operation during a busy stretch of summer travel.
The scheduled refurbishment began Monday, July 20, and is expected to keep the attraction unavailable through Thursday, July 23. Matterhorn Bobsleds is currently scheduled to reopen Friday, July 24, according to the Disneyland Resort operating calendar.
That makes this a short interruption—unless your Disneyland visit happens to fall within those four days. For affected guests, there is no partial experience or alternate track: the entire attraction is unavailable.
Disneyland Blocks Access to Matterhorn Bobsleds
A sign posted outside the attraction confirms that work is underway inside Disneyland’s artificial Alpine peak.
“Our bobsled runs are currently undergoing improvements,” the notice reads. “Please enjoy other Fantasyland attractions.”
The entrance queue has been chained off, and green coverings have been placed over the attraction’s Lightning Lane stations. Although the 147-foot mountain remains an unavoidable part of Disneyland’s skyline, the usual movement around its base has stopped.
Disneyland has not explained exactly what the “improvements” involve. The short timeframe points toward limited or routine work, but that is analysis—not confirmation that any particular component is being repaired or replaced.
The distinction matters. A refurbishment does not automatically mean guests will discover visible changes when the attraction returns. Theme-park rides routinely undergo inspections, preventative maintenance and behind-the-scenes work that may never be apparent from a bobsled.
The Closure Affects a Narrow Group of Summer Visitors
The biggest consequence is straightforward: guests visiting Disneyland from July 20 through July 23 need to remove Matterhorn Bobsleds from their plans.
The timing could be especially disappointing for travelers making a single visit or those who prioritize Disneyland’s oldest experiences. Unlike an extended refurbishment, however, this closure does not consume the remainder of the summer season. Guests arriving Friday or later should find the attraction operating again, assuming Disneyland’s schedule does not change.
Inside the Magic initially reported that the Matterhorn would close beginning July 20 when no return date was listed. Disneyland subsequently added July 24 to the schedule, substantially shortening the anticipated wait.
The closure also arrived amid a broader collection of scheduled Disneyland Resort refurbishments. Inside the Magic’s July and August closure breakdown previously identified the Matterhorn’s July 20–23 downtime alongside other temporary attraction and dining interruptions.
Guests should continue checking the Disneyland app on the morning of their visit. Reopening dates are planning targets, not guarantees, and Disney notes that its published schedules remain subject to change.
Four Days Carry More Weight for a 67-Year-Old Ride
Matterhorn Bobsleds is not merely another coaster awaiting maintenance.
The attraction opened on June 14, 1959, during Disneyland’s first substantial expansion. According to Disney’s own 65th-anniversary history of the Matterhorn, it became the world’s first roller coaster to use a tubular steel track. That engineering breakthrough influenced the modern steel-coaster industry far beyond Anaheim.
Its two tracks carry riders through caves, beneath waterfalls and past the Abominable Snowman before the bobsleds splash down at the mountain’s base. The experience is compact, physical and unmistakably old-school—qualities that help explain both its appeal and its continuing maintenance demands.
This is also not the Matterhorn’s first recent absence. A far longer refurbishment in 2025 placed construction walls around parts of the attraction and kept it unavailable for weeks. Compared with that disruption, the current four-day window is considerably less invasive for vacation planning.
That is the real story behind this closure. Disneyland has temporarily removed one of its defining experiences during summer, but it has not stranded the attraction in an open-ended refurbishment. The mountain is closed, the entrances are covered and this week’s visitors will miss their race past the Abominable Snowman.
For everyone arriving after Thursday, however, the wait may already be over.
