A Stray Firework Hits Massive Crowd at Disney Park in Orlando

On the night of July 9th, something unexpected happened at Fantasmic at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, and a guest caught the whole thing on camera.

During the show, a stray pyrotechnic effect misfired from the lagoon stage and traveled directly into the amphitheater seating area. The video, shared on Reddit, shows the small firework crossing the water and entering the crowd before appearing to fizzle out just before making contact with anyone in the stands. No one was injured. The show kept going without interruption. Cast members did not break stride and the performance ran straight through to the finale.

But the video is something else.

What Fantasmic Is

If you have never seen it, Fantasmic is one of the signature nighttime shows at Walt Disney World and a genuine highlight of any Hollywood Studios visit. The show runs nightly in a large outdoor amphitheater built around a lagoon, sometimes twice depending on park hours, and it draws crowds to every performance.

The story follows Mickey Mouse as a sorcerer’s apprentice whose dream is taken over by Disney villains, including Maleficent, who appears as a towering 40-foot dragon. Characters from Moana, Frozen 2, Mulan, Aladdin, Pocahontas, Beauty and the Beast, The Little Mermaid, and The Lion King all appear throughout the show, which uses water projections, live stunts, music, and pyrotechnics to tell the story.

Those pyrotechnics are a built-in part of the show. Fantasmic uses fire and small firework effects up close as part of the theatrical experience. It is not a grand fireworks show like Happily Ever After. The effects are meant to be seen from a short distance, which is part of what makes the show visually stunning and also what made this misfire land where it did.

What It Means

Nobody got hurt and the show went on. By every practical measure the incident resolved itself without consequence. But for the guests sitting in that section of the amphitheater on July 9th, watching a firework come off the stage and head toward the crowd was not a comfortable moment regardless of how it ended.

Disney has not commented publicly on the incident.

Mishaps happen at live entertainment venues. Disney World runs complex shows with real fire and real pyrotechnics in front of thousands of guests every single night, and the margin for error is extremely small. Most nights everything goes perfectly. July 9th was not most nights.

Fantasmic is still absolutely worth seeing on your next Hollywood Studios visit. Just know that the front rows can get wet, the pyrotechnics are closer than you might expect, and even the most magical place on earth is not completely immune to the unexpected.
